Howard Lane Harper Jr., affectionately known as “String,” age 73, of Hanover, Virginia, passed away on December 16, 2025, surrounded by love and memories of a life well lived.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Harper and Howard Harper Sr., and his brother, Albert “Al” Harper.
Howard proudly served his community as a Henrico County Firefighter, dedicating many years to protecting and helping others. After retirement, he pursued a second career as a DJ, driven by his lifelong love of music. Music was always a central part of his life—he played in multiple bands over the years and found great joy performing and sharing his passion with others. When he wasn’t making music, Howard could often be found fishing, a pastime that brought him peace and happiness.
Above all else, Howard cherished time spent with his family and friends. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, PawPaw, and friend, known for his kind heart, steady presence, and ability to bring people together.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Beverley Harper; his sister-in-law, Maria Harper; his children, Scott Smith, Lori Lee (Jerry Lee), Julie Hardacre, and Mindy Halbrook; and his grandchildren: Courtney (Nathan), Amber (Devonte), Jordan (Cody), Sydney (Coty), Alyssa (JK), Camden (Devon), Chloe, Sam, Gracie, Chance (Brooke), Kayley (William), Benjamin, Lily, and Charlie. He also leaves behind his treasured great-grandchildren: Landon, Carter, Grayson, Easton, Cruz, Willow, Raelynn, McKenna, Cali, Brayden, Mallory, and Henry, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
The family would like to invite those whose lives Howard touched to Woody’s Funeral Home – Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, 23116, for a visitation from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday, December 26, 2025. A service will follow at 2:00 PM.

Howard “String” Harper will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and lovingly carried in the hearts of all who knew him.
