Elfriede Gehler, age 89, passed away peacefully the afternoon of Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at her home in Henrico, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, LTC William Gehler; her daughter, Barbara Gehler; son, Eric Gehler; and brother, Gunter Ollig. She is survived by her grandson Andrew; and her brothers, Rolf and Werner Ollig.
Elfriede called Virginia home for more than 40 years, but was truly well traveled having lived in three countries and traveled to countless others. She was an avid collector of keepsakes, each bearing witness to a moment or place in her richly lived life. Her home was a testament to her journeys: vibrant, storied, and filled with warmth.
Friede, Mom, Grammy, regardless of what you knew her as, one thing is for sure, Elfriede left her mark on anyone that she met. A home-cooked meal, a simple story about her children and grandson, or an unbelievable retelling of her childhood during WWII in her home country of Germany, you always left with something to remember her by.
Elfriede left more than just stories and souvenirs behind, she left a legacy of strength, kindness, and curiosity. She lived a life that spanned continents and generations, leaving her mark in every place she touched and in every person who had the joy of knowing her.
A private remembrance will be held by her family. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to share a favorite story, prepare a meal for someone you love, or simply raise a glass to life’s small, beautiful moments, just as Elfriede would have.
