Obituary - Arthur Lawrence Davis
Arthur Lawrence Davis—Larry Davis—of Richmond, who filled every room he entered with his larger-than-life gregariousness, laughter, and joie de vivre, departed this world on March 12, 2026.
Larry was born in France on May 16, 1962 when his parents were living overseas—a fitting beginning for such a bon vivant. He grew up in Maryland and Virginia and graduated from Varina High School, where he found a spotlight on the theater stage. Larry worked as a hair stylist at salons around Richmond, and styled the hair of many a bride, for over thirty years. He could style anything—an outfit, a home, a table, a party, or the flowers he grew and frequently gave away as bouquets—with ease. He appeared in the Sissy Spacek movie Trading Mom, graced the cover of Richmond Magazine when the publication included a photo spread featuring his home downtown, and competed in Dancing with the Richmond Stars, a fundraising event for the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.
An excellent cook with a fabulous Julia Child impression, Larry in recent years began selling the pimento cheese he had long made for family and friends. Larry’s Famous High Kick Pimento Cheese—the name a play on the impressive forehead-high kick he would deftly display—was a staple at the West End Farmer’s Market and at Larry’s, a shop he opened in 2024.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joan Custalow and Clifford Davis; his niece Taylor Davis; and his brother Robbie Custalow. He is survived by his siblings, Chuck Davis (Tracey), John Davis, Sandra Custalow, Georgianna Custalow-Hall (Scott), Harvey Custalow (Jennifer), and Elisabeth Custalow; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; two uncles; and innumerable beloved friends.
Anyone who knew Larry knows that his life and light could never be contained in a few paragraphs but will expand with our remembrances.
Larry’s funeral will be held on March 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Bridget Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Road in Richmond, where he was a congregant. A reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome and invited to attend. In lieu of sending flowers, please consider planting some in his memory or donating to Diversity Richmond or the Byrd Theatre Foundation, on whose board Larry served.
