The Virginia Department of Transportation will open the northern segment of the Fall Line Trail in Henrico and Hanover counties July 28 for bicyclist and pedestrian use.

The segment covers nearly five miles of shared-use path from Walder Lane to Holly Hill Road in Hanover County and from Winfrey Road to Woodman Road in Henrico County. Trail users will have the opportunity to travel along 10-foot wide shared-use paths while enjoying features of the old Trolley Line.

The section from Holly Hill Road to Winfrey Road in Hanover County will remain closed to users until late summer, including access to the 130-foot-long single-span pedestrian truss bridge over the Chickahominy River.

The trail ultimately will connect Ashland with Petersburg along 43 miles of paved trail. The concept for the trail arose from a desire of officials to connect various active transportation networks in the Greater Richmond region.

Several sections of the trail already existed or were planned in localities’ comprehensive and special area plans, including the existing Ashland Trolley Line Trail and Chester Linear Park, and planned Trolley Line Connector in Henrico, Brook Road protected bike lanes in Richmond, and the Northern Emancipation Highway Special Area Plan in Chesterfield.

The trail will run through the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico; the cities of Colonial Heights, Petersburg and Richmond; and the Town of Ashland.
