The Mission Gait Foundation will host its annual Discover Your Possible event on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Richmond Volleyball Club’s Byrdhill facility in Lakeside, offering a full day of education, activities, and community for people with lower-limb loss, their caregivers, and rehabilitation professionals.
The program blends instruction with hands-on experiences designed to empower attendees in their rehabilitation and daily lives. Registration costs $25 for participants, $15 for caregivers, and $10 for rehab volunteers. Advanced registration is required through the Discover Your Possible event page.
The morning will feature a lecture and lab with David Lawrence, founder and CEO of Mission Gait, and then VCU professor Paul Kline will deliver the keynote address, “Beyond the Prosthesis: How the Brain and Vision Influence Mobility.”
Attendees also will hear a micro lecture from RVA Counseling and take part in a Q&A panel featuring a range of voices: Lawrence; Mission Gait board member and limb loss advocate Robin Yoder; prosthetists Chris Stokesbary and Joe Sullivan; and Dr. John Hermansen, of VCU Health.
Afternoon sessions will move from classroom to court with opportunities to try sitting and standing volleyball, cycling, pickleball, golf simulation, and functional fitness with Kaizen Adaptive Fitness. Caregivers can join a dedicated support group led by Dr. Tammy Redman. Local providers and peer mentors also will be on hand to connect with attendees.
“Discover Your Possible takes rehabilitation out of the clinic and back into the community,” said Lawrence. “Participants leave with new skills, local connections, and the confidence to pursue the activities they love.”
