Virginia Delegate Delores L. McQuinn (D – 81st District) will lead volunteers, community partners, and local leaders in a special day-after-Thanksgiving service event as part of Virginia’s annual observance of “I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper Day.” The event will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at Housing Families First, 3900 East Nine Mile Road in Henrico.
Established through House Joint Resolution 38 (2018), “I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper Day” designates the Friday after Thanksgiving each year as a day of service, unity, and community care statewide. In that spirit, McQuinn and participants will pack breakfast bags for families served by Housing Families First, a nonprofit that provides emergency shelter, rapid re-housing, and support services to those experiencing homelessness.
The effort is designed in part to spotlight a light on the challenges facing vulnerable households and the shared responsibility to support neighbors throughout the year — not just during the holiday season – according to McQuinn's office.
Community members are encouraged to donate any of the following items, which may be dropped off directly at Housing Families First:
• small boxes of cereal;
• shelf-stable milk or juice boxes;
• granola bars;
• fruit cups or pouches;
• a short motivational or kind note to include in each bag
Those wishing to volunteer on Nov. 28 or contribute donations should contact McQuinn’s office at (804) 698-1081 or email DelDMcQuinn@house.virginia.gov.
“Service is at the heart of community,” said McQuinn. “On a weekend when we reflect on gratitude, this day reminds us to extend our blessings by caring for our brothers and sisters who need us most.”
