Henrico Social Services to host 2 orientation sessions for prospective foster parents
Table of Contents
The Henrico County Social Services Division's Foster Care program will host two orientation meetings in the coming weeks to provide information for prospective foster parents.
Attending one of the orientation sessions is the first step for adults who may be interested in fostering a child or children.
The meetings will be held:
• Jan. 21, online, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (register here);
• Feb. 3, at Twin Hickory Library, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The program is seeking families for all ages of children, especially those ages 12 and older; large sibling groups (two or more children); young children (ages birth to four) who cannot attend daycare for various reasons.
The division is seeking resource parents (approved providers who are committed both to supporting family reunification and also to adopting the child if the child and family do not reunify) and respite parents (who provide temporary care for children on an emergency or planned basis).
Sometimes children are unable to return home, so in Virginia, all families are dually-certified as foster parents and adoptive parents. Families may specify their preference for foster care, adoption or both during the home study process, but dual-certification provides more flexibility for the family and allows for changing future circumstances.
Respite providers also provide support to biological parents to prevent foster care.
