Henrico Fire officials urge caution during current dry conditions

Henrico County Fire officials are asking residents to exercise caution with outdoor fires as a result of the current dry weather conditions.

With no rain in the foreseeable future, it's even more critical that residents practice outdoor fire safety measures and obtain permits from the Henrico Fire Marshal's office for fireworks and open burning.

“Whether you’re enjoying an evening by the fire pit or have been issued a permit to burn leaves or use fireworks, it’s important to know that current conditions are especially favorable for fire,” said Henrico Fire Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Scott Sutton.

Although there are no plans to change existing permits, Sutton urged residents to be vigilant and follow safety precautions. He compared the current situation to a similar period this summer when there was no rain for weeks.

“Any time ground moisture levels are low, and leaves and vegetation begin to dry out, it puts us on high alert,” Sutton said.

A permit is required for open burning, including leaves, brush, and land clearing. Grills, chimineas, and small gas and wood fire pits are exempt from requiring a permit.

Fire Marshal's Office officials advise never leaving a fire or open ignition sources unattended, ensuring complete extinguishment before walking away, soaking used fireworks, hot coals, and charcoal in water, and keeping an abundant water source or fire extinguisher nearby.

Permitted fireworks should only be used in open areas, away from grass, trees, and buildings.

Residents should call 911 if they believe there is an outdoor fire hazard and contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at FireMarshal@henrico.gov or (804) 501-4900 with questions or concerns about outdoor burning, permissible fireworks, and permits.
