Henrico residents are invited to lace up their running shoes later this month for a special 5K honoring the memory of a beloved Deep Run High School football player who died five years ago.

The Gabe Henderson Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. at Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Road in Glen Allen. Proceeds from the event, organized by the LiveLike10 Foundation, will fund scholarships, provide equipment and camp opportunities for underprivileged youth, and support other community needs.

Henderson, then a junior at Deep Run, died at the age of 17 in an April 2020 boating accident on Lake Anna in Louisa County. Friends and family remembered him as a generous person who was committed to helping others, a legacy that his namesake foundation (created by his grandfather, James Safewright) now seeks to carry forward.

Registration is $30 and available online.

The run will feature multiple sponsorship opportunities, including Bronze ($250), Silver ($500) and Gold ($1,000) levels. Sponsors will be recognized in event promotional materials and on race t-shirts, organizers said.

Those interested in becoming a sponsor, registering for the event or learning more about it should contact Kathy Melvin at (804) 944-7726 or by email at kathymelvin@verizon.net.
