Future 'forest' takes shape at Nuckols Farm Elementary School
On March 21, Capital Trees and Henrico County Parks and Recreation partnered for a tree-planting at Nuckols Farm Elementary School, with help from dozens of community volunteers. Among the club and corporate volunteers were a number from Capgemini and The Rotary Club of Richmond; parents and students from several schools, including Our Lady of Lourdes, also helped with the planting.
Using an innovative planting technique called the Miyawaki Method of Reforestation, the volunteers planted several hundred seedlings very close together. Varieties included chokeberry, yellow poplar, black cherry, black gum, white oak, redbud, swamp oak and black walnut. The slender seedlings with bare roots, known as whip trees, will create a mini-forest that matures years faster than one planted using traditional reforestation methods.
