When Katie Troy's son was hospitalized with Burkett’s Lymphoma in November of 2021, she was working part-time at the Tuckahoe YMCA. During his treatment, Mason received multiple blood transfusions, but sometimes his treatment had to be delayed due to a low platelet count.

Mason died Jan. 11, 2022, when his platelet count plunged to its lowest yet, but no platelets were available to him. As a result, the YMCA dedicated a blood drive in his memory, and has allowed Troy to host a blood drive every December.

Thirty-one people turned out for last year's drive, which collected 27 blood donations for patients (including 5 Power Red donations) and could impact as many as 81 lives.

This year's blood drive will take place Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Family Gym at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue. Donors are encouraged to reserve a donation time here. Questions about donating? Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-733-2767.
