Freeman High School's girls' tennis team earned secured a five-peat June 12 – its fifth straight Class 5 state championship – with a 5-0 victory against Cox High School at Huntington Park in Newport News.

It was a particularly impressive repeat performance for the Mavericks because of what was missing: five seniors from last year's four-time championship team. This year's squad had just two returners in the six singles' spots, but the team didn't miss a beat.

In the championship, Freeman's No. 2 (Madison Gerecke), 3 (Nikki Rajan), 4 (Lily Brooks), 5 (Marisa Burke) and 6 (Annie Flippin) seeds all won their singles' matches in straight sets, and No. 1 seed Paige Suter was leading her match 5-1 in the second set, but it was called once the outcome of the championship had been determined.

Gerecke won her match 6-2, 6-2, Rajan won hers 6-1, 6-0, and Brooks won hers 6-2, 6-4. Burke (6-1, 6-2) and Floppin (6-1, 6-3) also easily dispatched their opponents.
