A 13-year-old boy riding an electric motorcycle was critically injured when his vehicle crashed into an SUV in Henrico's Far West End just before 9 p.m. May 20.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Wyndham Park Drive and Dominion Club Drive. A preliminary investigation by Henrico Police concluded that the teen was traveling north on Wyndham Park Drive attempting to turn onto Glenshaw Drive when he collided with a Lexus RX.
Police officers found the teen in the roadway when they arrived; he was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains there in critical condition. Dark roadways, a lack of lights or reflective equipment on the motorcycle and dark clothing appear to be contributing factors, police said, but added that they are investigating other factors that may have been involved.
The other driver involved in the crash remained at the scene.
Police officials are reminding the public about their “Never Too Safe On 2 Wheels” traffic safety campaign, which urges cyclists to ensure they are following proper safety measures, obeying traffic lights, signs, speed limits and land markets, as well as wearing helmets and other protective gear, riding with the flow of traffic and leaving plenty of room between themselves and other vehicles.
