Richmond saxophonist James “Saxsmo” Gates at The Tin Pan

Richmond saxophonist James “Saxsmo” Gates will perform at The Tin Pan, 8982 Quioccasin Road, on Saturday, May 27 at 8 p.m.

Saxsmo is the founder, director and coordinator of the Dr. Billy Taylor Jazz Studies Program at Virginia State University. He is a former board member of the Richmond Jazz Society, former board member of the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, present board member of Richmond Cultural Works, and present board member of The HBCU Jazz Education Initiative. His last full recording, “Stepping Out,” was released in April 2020. It included the hit single “Together We Can Make It!”
