SunTrust to sponsor raceways’s military appreciation program


JULY 31, 10:15 A.M. – Richmond Raceway and SunTrust Banks, Inc. today announced that the financial institution would sponsor the raceway's military appreciation program for the fall NASCAR race weekend, presented by Who’s Your Driver.

The "Military Appreciation Program presented by SunTrust" will feature an opportunity for fans to visit the SunTrust “onUp on Tour” pop-up entertainment experience that inspires visitors to learn about finances through interactive, sports-based activities.

Code Lacrosse joins Richmond Strikers


The Code Lacrosse youth program has joined the Richmond Strikers and will be rebranded as Richmond Strikers Boys Lacrosse, the two programs announced June 19.

Code Lacrosse, founded in 2010, hosts teams for boys in elementary and middle school.

Jordan Clevey will run the day-to-day operations as the director of the program, while Code Lacrosse's director, Steve Ceperich, will provide program oversight as the director of development and coaching.

5 Henrico student-athletes win scholarships at awards dinner

Five Henrico student-athletes were among 20 from the region honored with scholarships at the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at The Jefferson Hotel June 5.

The program, now in its 26th year, honors local scholar-athletes for their athletic, academic and extracurricular achievements. Since the program's inception in 1992, more than $1 million in scholarship money has been awarded to 514 outstanding student-athletes from the Richmond region.

Squirrels Unveil ‘Comic’ Nutzy

The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, today unveiled two comic-themed images of Nutzy that will be featured across all of the club’s marketing and branding for the 2011 season.

“Nutzy has been one of the most identifiable members of the Flying Squirrels organization,” said Vice President and COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “From the moment we introduced him in February, he was an instant hit with adults and kids alike. As we prepare for our second season in Richmond, we want to build Nutzy’s celebrity status and making him the centerpiece of our branding will help accomplish that.”

A big league experience for 9-year-old

For most nine-year-olds, playing in a state championship baseball game would be plenty of excitement for one summer.

But Nick Biddison topped off his state finals adventure by traveling to Anaheim, Calif., and competing in the nationals of another baseball competition, the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run.

St. Gertrude to offer athletic camps in Henrico

Saint Gertrude High School will offer several athletic camps for girls this summer at its Outdoor Athletic Center in Henrico, including softball (June 17-21 and August 5-8) and field hockey (June 17-21; Weed Wackers Field Hockey for third- through fifth-graders Aug. 5-8). The SGHS Outdoor Athletic Center is located at 500 Scott Road off North Parham Road. Sports camps to be held on the school campus on Stuart Avenue in Richmond's Museum District include basketball (July 15-19) and volleyball (July 29-Aug. 2).

Queen Harrison, a Hermitage High School and Virginia Tech graduate, is in the running for The Bowerman, the nation's top award for collegiate track and field athletes.
