Henrico-based nonprofit Commonwealth Autism recently received the Standards for Excellence Institute’s Seal of Excellence for successfully completing its accreditation program. Commonwealth Autism voluntarily opened itself to analysis by a peer review team during the last 18 months that examined the organization’s compliance with the “Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector.” These standards cover areas such as: mission, strategy and evaluation; leadership – board, staff and volunteers; legal compliance and ethics; finance and operations; resource development; and public awareness, engagement and advocacy. Commonwealth Autism was one of six organizations in the Richmond region to be recognized and the first in the region to achieve full accreditation. In addition to this accreditation, Commonwealth Autism is recognized as an Accredited Charity with the Richmond Better Business Bureau and holds accreditation from the Code of Ethics for Behavioral Organizations (COEBO).

Purify Infrared Sauna opens at GreenGate


Purify Infrared Sauna recently opened its second Henrico location at GreenGate Shopping Center in Short Pump.

Owner Mary Woodbridge opened her first Purify location on Patterson Avenue in July 2015. The new store is located at 301 Maltby Boulevard, Suite C, west of Short Pump Town Center.

Capital One sponsors ‘Coders Experience’


Capital One hosted its “Coders Experience” event in Richmond and a number of other state locations Oct. 14. The events attracted hundreds of middle school girls, who learned how to create their own mobile apps, hone problem-solving skills and gain software development knowledge. A second day of Coders Experience events will take place Oct. 21. More than 500 Capital One volunteers are participating in the 10 events.

Commonwealth Senior Living at the West End, located at 2400 Gaskins Rd., will hold their grand opening on Oct. 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The community recently underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation which included the addition of a new memory care neighborhood, new resident suites, an expanded dining room, and brand-new courtyards and additional outdoor spaces. Commonwealth Senior Living associates will be on site to provide tours of the newly renovated community.

Publix to open at Virginia Center Marketplace Oct. 11


Publix will open its next Henrico location at 10150 Brook Road in the Virginia Center Marketplace shopping center in Glen Allen Oct. 11 at 7 a.m. The store will host a grand opening ceremony at that time.

The location will be the Florida chain's fifth in Henrico, joining those already open at Nuckols Place and The Shoppes at Crossridge in Glen Allen, The Shops at White Oak Village in Eastern Henrico and John Rolfe Commons in the Far West End.

Thalhimer Realty Partners, Inc., the investment and development subsidiary of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer, recently announced that Jason Guillot had joined as principal. Guillot has more than 10 years of experience in brokerage and development. During this time with Thalhimer, he has been responsible for acquiring and managing the redevelopment of several projects, including three medical office buildings and the high-profile Westhampton On Grove mixed-use project. He will focus on the growth of TRP’s office, medical and mixed-use portfolio and will assist with asset management of TRP’s existing holdings. Guillot is a member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, on the board of Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate, and is the incoming president of the Westhampton Merchants Association.

Long & Foster acquired by HomeServices of America


HomeServices of America, Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate, announced Sept. 7 that it had acquired The Long & Foster Companies, Inc., the largest private residential real estate company in the United States (by sales volume). The acquisition includes Long & Foster’s family of companies, including Long & Foster Real Estate and its market-leading affiliated business lines in mortgage, settlement services, insurance, and property management.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Biomat USA, Inc. relocates to Henrico County


Grifols has completed the relocation of its Biomat USA Inc. facility to Henrico County.

The new facility, located at 4350 South Laburnum Avenue in Eastern Henrico, represents a nearly $2.9 million investment. It is a plasma donor center that employs 45 people and helps create life-saving medicines.

Car Pool locations to host 40th anniversary celebration Sept. 9


All six local Car Pool car wash locations will celebrate the business's 40th anniversary with pizza, cupcakes and gift bags while supplies last from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 9. The local chain has three Henrico locations – at 5514 West Broad Street, 9200 West Broad Street and 11950 West Broad Street.

Duck Donuts team members are raising money for Gabe’s Chemo Duck Program, a unique nonprofit organization which provides a comprehensive educational program supporting children and families living with cancer. The program includes a 12-inch, soft Chemo Duck used for medical play therapy; a bilingual companion overview book; printable activity book; and educational DVD that includes a cartoon about the program. The money raised in each store will benefit their local Gabe’s Chemo Duck Program affiliated children’s hospital oncology group. Patrons can support this program throughout the month of September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, by purchasing a $1 paper Ribbon Icon or a pediatric cancer awareness rubber duck, where $1 of the proceeds will benefit the organization.

Dominion drops electric rates slightly Sept. 1


SEPT. 1, 12:05 A.M. – Electric rates are dropping today for Dominion Energy residential customers.

A typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour residential monthly bill will drop by $1.55 beginning today, due largely to a $2.07 reduction in transmission-related costs. The company is continuing to upgrade and modernize its transmission system, but transmission-related costs for residential customers decreased when compared to the previous year's total.

Lidl to open third Henrico store Sept. 21


Lidl will open its third Henrico store Thursday, Sept. 21 at 9101 Hermitage Road, at its intersection with Staples Mill Road.

The new store will open at 8 a.m., preceded by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:40 a.m. It will be Lidl's fifth store in the region. The other four locations – including one at 5110 S. Laburnum Avenue and another at 12151 W. Broad Street in Henrico – opened July 27.

Exhibitors sought for ‘Mission Tomorrow’ student career exploration event


Organizers of the second-annual 'Mission Tomorrow' – a regional interactive career exploration event for middle school students – are seeking businesses and organizations to exhibit at the event, which will be held Nov. 1-2 at Richmond Raceway Complex. The event is expected to draw 12,000 eighth-graders.

Organizers are seeking more than 100 exhibitors to provide students with brief, fun, engaging experiences as they explore various career options.
