Challenger Day will get students with disabilities onto the field


Students from 22 Henrico County elementary schools will take to the baseball field Oct. 18 and learn how to field, hit and run the bases. The students will take part in Challenger Day, an annual event at the Tuckahoe Park Baseball Complex that introduces students with significant disabilities to the fundamentals of baseball. The students will also enjoy games, an art project, roaming mascots and a picnic lunch.

Eisenman & Associates, Inc. employee Tracie Grady recently was named the 2017 Virginia Business Meeting Planner of the Year. Grady was chosen by a committee of industry leaders among 19 nominees. The award is a partnership between Virginia Business magazine and the Virginia Society of Association Executives. Its goal is to recognize the unsung hero of the association, non-profit, and business world, the professional meeting planner. Grady works with clients in a number of areas, including membership management, publication design, membership directories and convention/tradeshow programs. She has worked in the association industry, primarily focused on meeting planning, for more than 20 years. She is a graduate of VCU. Burlington Coat Factory is hosting its fourth annual Warm Coats & Warm Hearts Drive, in partnership with ABC’s Good Morning America and One Warm Coat, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing coats to those in need. All-American Status Grant-ed

Hermitage High School senior football player Curtis Grant of last month was selected to play in the 2011 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, joining an elite group of All-Americans. Grant will participate in the game, held Jan. 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Tex., as part of the East squad. The game will be televised live on NBC at 1 p.m. and will feature the nation’s top 90 high school football players.

Lakeside ES Named Title 1 Distinguished School

The Virginia Department of Education has recognized Lakeside Elementary School as a National Title 1 Distinguished School. Lakeside Elementary School was selected by a peer review panel to represent Virginia in the category of "Closing the Achievement Gap Among Student Groups" for two or more consecutive years.

Henrico Earns SNAP Hunger Award

Henrico County was among the recipients of the Bronze Hunger Champion Award as part of the 2010 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), announced last month by the USDA. Award recipients were cited for demonstrating exemplary service, conducting outreach activities and assisting eligible clients to obtain nutrition benefits.

Capital One to Add 700 Jobs in Henrico County

Virginia-based Capital One Financial Corporation recently announced that it would expand its Virginia operations by more than 1,000 new positions in 2010 and 2011, with 700 of those positions located in Henrico County. Capital One recently purchased two new commercial office buildings for its campus in the Innsbrook Office park in Henrico, where it plans to open a new call center and operations center in 2011. The new positions will support all segments of the Fortune 500 company’s business.
