McShin Academy expanding to St. Joseph’s Villa

‘Recovery’ high school aims to rehabilitate, educate

Two Lakeside-area nonprofits are partnering to create what is believed to be the first recovery high school in Virginia.

The McShin Academy will be a joint effort of the McShin Foundation (a recovery community organization based at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Lakeside) and St. Joseph's Villa (a 183-year-old nonprofit on Brook Road that provides a variety of services for children with special needs).

Reynolds CC dedicates student center


Reynolds Community College recently celebrated the dedication of the Jerry and Mary Owen Student Center, named for longtime supporters of the college who have made numerous investments in it.

Jerry Owen served on the Reynolds College Board from 1984 to 1988, and he and his wife support the college’s scholarship fund and created an endowment for the Reynolds Middle College, which helps students earn a high school equivalency and transition into a degree or workforce credential program.

Police Locate Missing 81-Year-Old Man

Henrico Police have located John "Jake" Lingerfelt, Jr., an 81-year-old white male who was missing since Nov. 22. Lingerfelt was found safe and has been returned home to his family, a police official said.

Lorraine Gilyard
A missing Henrico woman has been found safe in Richmond and returned to her family, Henrico Police officials announced today. Lorraine Annette Gilyard, 48, was reported missing Nov. 12 but was located by a family friend this week.

The 9th annual Short Pump Mile and Short Pump Express Fun Run, Richmond’s largest timed road race just for kids, will start at 7:30 a.m. in front of American Family Fitness in Short Pump. All participants will receive a race t-shirt, medal and refreshments. Awards will be given to age group and overall winners. The Short Pump Express, a 400-Meter Fun Run (non-timed), is offered to children age five and younger who aren't quite up to tackling the mile. The School Participation Competition will award the top five schools with the most participants a total of $2,000 to be used for their physical education programs; new this year – all schools with 25 or more registered runners will earn $100.
