Challenger Day will get students with disabilities onto the field


Students from 22 Henrico County elementary schools will take to the baseball field Oct. 18 and learn how to field, hit and run the bases. The students will take part in Challenger Day, an annual event at the Tuckahoe Park Baseball Complex that introduces students with significant disabilities to the fundamentals of baseball. The students will also enjoy games, an art project, roaming mascots and a picnic lunch.

Henrico ranks 5th statewide in tourism

Visitors spent $879.6M in the county in 2016

Tourist spending in Henrico County by domestic travelers increased by 3.2 percent in 2016 to $879.6 million, according to a study released earlier this month by the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

That total was the fifth-highest amount in the state, keeping Henrico in the same spot it occupied in 2015, behind only Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach. Statewide, tourist spending rose 3.3 percent last year.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital opens Neonatal Intensive Care Unit


HCA Virginia’s Henrico Doctors’ Hospital this week announced the opening of its new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The unit is the final piece of the expansion phase of The Women’s Hospital, a health facility that opened in December. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital now features the largest community-based Level III NICU in Central Virginia and the only NICU with 24/7 neonatologists on-site.

Henrico woman crowned 2018 ‘Miss State Fair’


Carlehr Swanson of Henrico County is the 2018 Miss State Fair of Virginia.

Swanson, 20, is pursuing a degree in jazz studies at George Mason University, where she is a junior. She was crowned Oct. 1 and will compete in the Miss Virginia pageant next summer.

Henrico Police make second arrest in homicide investigation


Henrico Police have arrested a second man in connection with the shooting death of a juvenile April 11.

Police arrested 20-year-old James Edwin McLaughlin III, age 20, of Chesterfield and charged him with first-degree murder, shooting from a vehicle and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Crime Stoppers needs your help to locate a dangerous fugitive who is wanted by the Richmond Police Department.

Detoin Sherod Melton is wanted for his participation in a home invasion robbery that occurred in Richmond’s South Side on Jan. 13. Melton, along with two other males, forced their way into the victim’s homes while brandishing a shotgun.

Henrico to host Community Day Oct. 7


Henrico County will host its annual Community Day Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Western Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road.

Henrico citizens and others will have an opportunity to peruse county agencies’ static displays, discover job opportunities, observe police and fire demonstrations, talk with county officials and experience tours of the jail facility and courthouse displays.

Henrico County Police Division earns traffic safety awards

The Henrico County Police Division recently received three awards recognizing its efforts in promoting traffic safety within Henrico County during 2016. The awards were presented during the Virginia Chiefs of Police Conference earlier this month in Virginia Beach.

The awards were part of the Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge, a traffic safety recognition program that recognizes agencies that excel in keeping their roadways safe.
