Purify Infrared Sauna recently opened its second Henrico location at GreenGate Shopping Center in Short Pump.

Owner Mary Woodbridge opened her first Purify location on Patterson Avenue in July 2015. The new store is located at 301 Maltby Boulevard, Suite C, west of Short Pump Town Center.

Henrico Master Gardener training program accepting applications through Oct. 27


The Henrico County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is accepting applications for its next volunteer Master Gardener training program, which provides instruction in all aspects of horticulture.

Applications for the 2018 training program will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 27. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 16 through March 22.

Lakewood, located on Lauderdale Drive, will break ground on the project Oct. 19 during a celebration that also will commemorate the community's 40th anniversary.

Henrico to hold Oct. 19 workshop on Route 5 Corridor/Marion Hill Study


The Henrico County Planning Department will hold a workshop Thursday, Oct. 19 for residents and other members of the public to provide additional input for a study of the Route 5 corridor and Marion Hill areas.

The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at John Rolfe Middle School, 6901 Messer Road. The meeting will include an overview of community input received so far and an explanation of how it is reflected in the study’s draft goals and objectives.

Nominations open for REB awards for principals


Nominations are open for the 2017-18 REB Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership, The Community Foundation’s yearly awards that identify, recognize and support leadership excellence in the Richmond area.

Honorees receive an unrestricted $7,500 cash grant, and $7,500 to be used for school initiatives. Nominees can be principals from public schools in Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover counties and the city of Richmond who have served in their current positions for at least three years.

Henrico to receive Homeland Security grant awards


Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced recently the culmination of a stakeholder-driven process to allocate more than $6.1 million through various federal grant programs to enhance emergency preparedness and security throughout the Commonwealth. The funds will be administered by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to support a wide array of emergency preparedness and security operations, equipment replacement, training, planning and exercise programs by local governments.

You might say that Lutheranism runs deep in Phillip Martin's blood. But though he is a descendant of one of the earliest Lutheran pastors in North Carolina, Henry Graeber, his own path to the pulpit took a circuitous route.

Martin, the senior pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church on Horsepen Road, graduated from N.C. State with a double-major in biochemistry and German studies, bound for a possible career in international medicine.

The Henrico Christmas Mother program will accept applications in person on three remaining days this month. The program, which provides holiday assistance to qualified Henrico County families with children; seniors; and disabled adults, will accept applications at its warehouse, 361 Dabbs House Road in Henrico, on Monday, Oct. 16, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and Monday, Oct. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Toyota salesman donates to veterans’ group


For McGeorge Toyota salesperson Tom Baskin, selling cars is personal. So much so that he has been able to donate $15,000 to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Mid-Atlantic Chapter by selling the most cars in April, June and July.

Baskin, who is a veteran himself (U.S. Air Force, 1973-1979), made the donations through the Random Acts of McGeorge program, which rewards the top salesperson each month with $5,000 that he or she may donate to a local charity of their choice.

Cat that attacked Varina homeowner tests positive for rabies


OCT. 11, 11:15 A.M. – A cat that attacked a Varina resisdent Oct. 9 has tested positive for rabies, Henrico Police officials confirmed today. It is the county's fourth confirmed rabies case this year.

While the homeowner was entering the home in the 9000 block of Battlefield Park Road, a stray cat tried to run inside. When the homeowner attempted to scare the cat off the porch, the cat bit the homeowner on the hand and ran inside.
