History Keeper
 | | Paul Levengood | By Patty Kruszewski, Henrico Citizen Managing Editor 03.JUL.08 When Dr. Charles F. Bryan, Jr. announced his plans to step down after leading the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) for two decades, the VHS Board of Trustees launched an exhaustive nationwide search for his successor.
After nine months, the Board reached into its own staff and its own backyard and plucked its new chief from Henrico County – a county that is also the home of Bryan.
The new CEO, Dr. Paul A. Levengood, joined VHS in 2000 and served as managing editor of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and program coordinator of the Reynolds Business History Center.
“We are blessed with an exceptional staff,” Bryan said, “and from the day he joined us eight years ago, Paul stood out as someone who had great leadership potential.” [read more] | New Animal Shelter Opens
By Eric Steigleder After opening its doors on May 20, the new Henrico County Animal Shelter welcomed 62 visitors and even more phone calls on its first day.
Considering that it already averages about 30 visitors daily, it’s not surprising that a new shelter has been in the works for several years.
The new facility at 10421 Woodman Road is not only centrally located, but better able to cope with the growing needs of Henrico County. The previous facility, located on Dabbs Road in eastern Henrico, had become too cramped to sustain the growing number of animal occupants. Today, the Families of the Wounded Fund, Inc. (FOTWF), is one of the only programs of its kind in the nation, providing $6,000 checks to families of military service men and women who are being treated for combat injuries at Richmond’s McGuire Veterans Hospital.
The program’s goal is to provide the financial resources necessary for lodging, transportation, meals, clothing and other needs that families incur while visiting Richmond to be with their loved ones. To date, it has raised more than $1.3 million and provided donations to nearly 140 families. The second-year findings show marked improvement from the previous year of the study in the quality of learning that is occurring in county high schools, Interactive, Inc. CEO Dale Mann told the School Board during a June 12 work session.
“This is a record of accomplishment,” he said. Social Services will accept nominations through Friday, Aug. 1.
The award, a component of Henrico’s Fatherhood Initiative, is part of an ongoing effort to highlight the importance of fathers, said Fatherhood Initiative Coordinator Phillip White. The award is named for its first recipient, an 82-year-old Henrico resident who is raising his step great-great grandson.
“Fathers play a critical role in the life of their families and the development of their children,” White said. “This program and award are designed to encourage men to step up and be a part of their children’s lives.” [read more]Despite Concerns, Wyndham Expansion Approved By Tom Lappas, Henrico Citizen Editor 19.JUN.08 Henrico’s largest residential community is about to get even bigger.
The Henrico County Board of Supervisors June 10 unanimously approved developer HHHunt’s plans to expand the Glen Allen development of Wyndham by 193 housing units.
The 97 single-family homes and 96 detached condos will be built in the far northwest corner of the county, against its border with Goochland County to the west and Hanover County to the north.
The board voted 4-0, with one member absent, in favor of the plan despite concerns from some Wyndham residents who believe it will worsen traffic problems, produce homes atypical for Wyndham and tax the community’s already crowded pool and recreation area. At least a dozen past presidents of TLL joined the celebration as the organization was commended for accomplishments that include developing a Challenger Division and producing teams that advanced to World Series competitions in 1968, 1971, 1976, 1981, and 1993.Wheeling In Readers
By Patty Kruszewski, Henrico Citizen Managing Editor 05.JUN.08 For most people, the word "reading" evokes images of a solitary, sedentary pastime, practiced in a serene silence broken only by the whisper of turning pages.
But for at least one local organization, reading and literacy events are best celebrated with a commotion – or even a disruption – and set against a background of throbbing chrome and steel machines and the roar of powerful engines.
When two dozen Riders for Readers rolled onto the Laburnum Elementary School campus on May 30, the scene was precisely that – and exactly what Eric Engler had in mind when he developed the program four years ago.
"I wanted to promote literacy in a different way, and provide books kids enjoy," said Engler, who calls himself "president and janitor" of Velocity Motorcycles. A majority of respondents to a U.S. Postal Service survey voted in favor of changing 11 county mailing addresses from "Richmond" to "Henrico," county officials announced last week. The change will take place at the end of the year.
County officials believe that Henrico has been losing at least $5 million annually in tax revenue that is mistakenly sent to Richmond as a result of the mailing address confusion.
In late April, the Postal Service sent more than 85,000 surveys to postal customers in 10 "Richmond" ZIP codes that exist entirely within Henrico County, as well as those in the Highland Springs ZIP code. Recipients had until May 10 to respond, and 29,505 did so. Of those, 18,063 – 61 percent – voted in favor of the address change, while 11,442 opposed the change.
