Milestones


The Henricopolis Soil & Water Conservation District, through an endowment with the Colonial Agricultural Foundation, recently provided three $1,500 scholarships to Henrico County students aspiring to earn degrees in the environmental sciences. The winners are: Erin Louise Thady – a rising senior at James Madison University; Robin Grace Thady – a rising freshman at the College of William and Mary; and Katherine Aylett Lipford – a rising sophomore at Virginia Tech.

The Henricopolis Soil & Water Conservation District annually sponsors two Henrico County students to attend Youth Conservation Camp sponsored by the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and held at Virginia Tech each summer. The district campers spend a week enjoying hands-on activities that focus on conservation topics. The campers representing Henricopolis in 2015 are: Nicholas O’Neill McDermott – a rising senior at Deep Run High School; and Jazmin Lopez-Herrera – a rising junior at Highland Springs High School.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently reappointed Richard H. “Chip” Decker, III, of Henrico, to the State Emergency Medical Services Advisory Board. Decker is CEO of the Richmond Ambulance Authority and is representing Old Dominion EMS Alliance. Gov. McAuliffe also appointed James Cuthbertson, of Glen Allen, to the Joint Leadership Council of Veteran Service Organizations. Cuthbertson is CPT USA (Ret.).

Trey Harrison, of Henrico, graduated May 15 from Bismarck State College in Bismarck, N.D. He received an AA in liberal arts.

John Hilker, of Glen Allen, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at Florida Institute of Technology. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher. Hilker is a mechanical engineering major.

Laura Richards, of Glen Allen, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at The University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

John Henry Kemp, of Henrico, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must have a minimum 3.6 grade point average. Kemp is enrolled in the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

Michael Yust, of Henrico, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum 3.6 grade point average. Yust is a graduate of St. Christopher’s School.

Varina and Mehfoud Elementary PTA will host a free Fall Festival at Varina Elementary School, 2551 New Market Rd., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival includes music, food, trunk or treat, costume contests, raffles, local vendors and games. There will also be a silent auction showcasing products and services from both national and local businesses.
