Obituary – Harold Gary Beard

Born on April 24, 1929, in Amherst, Va., Harold Gary Beard of Henrico, Va., passed away peacefully on May 7, 2017, with his daughter by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lawson Beard and Luna Cash Beard. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 66 years, Jean Brockman Beard; and two sons, Gary Beard of Houston, Texas and Jay Beard (Kathy) of Glen Allen, Va.; and one daughter, Kay Rosenthal (Ellis) of Glen Allen, Va.; and his "adopted" daughter, Robin Dunn Gilbert (Tom) of Mechanicsville, Va.; and four nieces and one nephew. He graduated from Temperance High School in Amherst, Va. in 1948. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. After serving his country, he moved to Richmond, Va. and became Trailways bus manager from 1953 to 1965. In 1965, he became vice president of Blanton's Package Delivery, Inc. until his retirement in 1987. After retiring, he worked part time for Metro Courier from 1987 to 1999. He was a graduate of Dale Carnegie courses and attended Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) for business. He was a longtime member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church for more than 60 years and an American Legion member. His hobbies included gardening, farming, splitting wood, and watching college basketball and pro football and his Baltimore Orioles. He and his family traveled to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Valley of Virginia on a regular basis during his lifetime. After retirement, he and his wife became "snow birds" and spent more than 20 years of their winters traveling to Florida and Texas. Anyone that knew Harold knew he didn't like cold weather and if he was at home in Virginia, he would have his wood stove in his family room burning wide open. The family will receive friends at Bliley's Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., Henrico, Va. on Sunday, May 14, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 15, 2 p.m., at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, 2300 Dumbarton Rd.
