HCPS Band Showcase scheduled for Oct. 16


All nine of Henrico County’s high school marching bands will be in action at the HCPS Band Showcase Monday, Oct. 16 at Glen Allen High School’s stadium.

The performance is free, but donations are being accepted to benefit the Henrico Christmas Mother.

Varina HS Band scholarship fundraiser planned

The Varina High School Band Scholarship Committee is sponsoring a fundraiser for 35 seniors who will be graduating from the school later this year. The event will be held at Seven Pines Baptist Church, Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 4 p.m.

Approximately 15 students will be applying for scholarships to an institution of higher learning. Participants in the program are students and a few faculty members from Varina High as well as local performers, including miming, praise dancing, singing and instrumentalist from local churches.

‘Remember the Titans’ night planned at Deep Run

The Deep Run Marathon Dance student committee will host a “Remember the Titans” Movie Night tomorrow, Feb. 25, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will feature 87-year-old former T.C. Williams High School football coach Bill Yoast, former player Petey Jones and several other "original" Titans portrayed in the 2000 Walt Disney movie featuring Denzel Washington.

Korean students visit J.R. Tucker H.S.

Six Korean students from Yangju City, South Korea, attended J.R. Tucker High School for a week in January, staying with host families from the Center for World Languages Specialty Center at Tucker. The South Korean city is linked with Henrico County in a sister-city relationship and was visited by former Henrico County Public Schools Superintendent Fred Morton and School Board member Diana Winston in 2008.

PTSAs collaborate to collect items for high school proms

The Hermitage and Varina high school PTSAs are collaborating to collect formal wear for Henrico County high school students who need such items for their proms this spring.

Gently used clothing items for boys and girls are being accepted. Of particular interest to organizers are dresses; men's suits in all sizes and styles; shoes; handbags; and jewelry.

Henrico team advances to state robotics championship

Members of Glen Allen High School’s “Teal Tornadoes” robotics team won top honors Jan. 14 at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Eastern Virginia Qualifying Tournament in Norfolk.

The team finished with top tournament scores and also won the “Inspire Award,” recognizing it for exceptional performance on and off the field of competition. The Teal Tornadoes will participate in the FTC Virginia Championship March 3 in Richmond.

Tucker H.S. becomes authorized IB diploma program school

Henrico County Public Schools recently announced that J.R. Tucker High School has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the IB Diploma Program.

Tucker is the 36th school in Virginia and the 2,299th school in the world to offer the program.

HFCU makes donation to Hermitage PTSA

Henrico Federal Credit Union officials presented a check for $599.57 Nov. 18 to Hermitage High School PTSA, signifying the amount of money earned by HFCU Community Rewards VISA cardholders. The Community Rewards VISA donates up to one percent of members' purchases to the Henrico PTA, PTSA or PTO of the cardholder's choice. The program has awarded more than $20,000 to such organizations since it debuted in 2003. Hermitage raised the most money this year.

Deep Run student is YoungArts finalist

Sophie Eichner of Deep Run High School is one of 152 finalists who will attend YoungArts Week in Miami, Florida in January.

As a visual artist, “Sophie Eichner is curious about the world, always asking ‘How come?’ and ‘What if?’ types of questions in her ever-present visual journals. Not only does Sophie think big ideas, she also has the mental capacity and work ethic to see them realized,” said her art teacher of three years, Michael Guyer. “Sophie Eichner is cultured and curious in a way that I just haven’t seen before.”
