72nd District Republican Primary – Ernesto Sampson, Edward Whitlock

In preparation for Tuesday's primary elections, the Henrico Citizen invited the candidates for every race that impacts Henrico County to answer several questions about themselves. The responses of those in this election who replied appear below:

Reinstating driver’s license could cost more for some

If your driver’s license has been suspended more than once, you soon may have to pay an extra $5 to get it restored.

That’s the effect of two bills that the General Assembly has sent to Gov. Bob McDonnell to be signed into law.

Bill would offer mothers a baby’s DNA sample

Virginia hospitals will have to offer new mothers a take-home DNA sample from their baby under a bill approved at the request of the forensic sleuth who inspired the fictional crime fighter, Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Both chambers of the General Assembly unanimously approved House Bill 1836, sponsored by Delegate John O’Bannon, R-Henrico. The bill now goes to Gov. Bob McDonnell to be signed into law.

Heart attack death rates plummet

Virginia’s overall heart attack mortality rates have decreased for the 10th year in a row, first lady Maureen McDonnell announced as state officials participated in the inaugural “Capitol Feats” walk to promote healthy habits that prevent heart disease.

Lobbyists, politicians face off on court

Legislators and lobbyists battled it out Tuesday night during the final week of the General Assembly’s 2011 session. Except this time, differences were settled on the basketball court, not in the Capitol.

In a fundraising event at the Siegel Center, the Governor’s Office took on a team of lobbyists in the 2011 Capitol Square Basketball Classic. Proceeds benefited Virginia Commonwealth University’s Massey Cancer Center.

Lawmakers tighten sex-offender restrictions

Adults convicted of sexually violent offenses would be barred from entering school buses and would have to submit a DNA sample under two bills headed toward approval in the General Assembly.

House Bill 2066 “expands the prohibition on entry onto school grounds by any adult convicted of a sexually violent offense to include any school bus.” The measure was approved unanimously by the House on Feb. 8 and by the Senate last week.

‘One-stop’ licensing proposed for new businesses

New businesses would have an easier time getting licenses and completing other paperwork under a bill proposed by Sen. Chap Petersen, D-Fairfax, and passed by the General Assembly.

On unanimous votes, Senate Bill 1226 received final approval last week by the House and Senate. If Gov. Bob McDonnell signs the bill into law, it will take effect July 1.

Teachers rally for public school funding

A crowd of more than 200 people chanted, “Senate stand firm!” as the last speaker stepped off the podium and into the swarm of Virginia Education Association members and supporters at a Capitol Square rally this week.

Bills seek health care jobs for veterans

Legislation headed toward approval in the General Assembly would allow veterans to count their military health-care training and experience toward certification as nurses and other medical professionals in Virginia.
