James River Juvenile Detention Center to graduate its largest class

James River Juvenile Detention Center will celebrate its largest class of high school graduates June 27, as 13 residents receive their high school diploma or GED certificate.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the detention center, 3650 Beaumont Road in Powhatan County. The graduates will mark their academic milestone by walking across a stage in a cap and gown before an audience of family members. A reception will follow.

Henrico Extension to offer free seminars about reviving lawns Aug. 9-11

The Henrico County Extension Office will continue its free, year-round seminar series Aug. 9-11 with a program on summer lawn care. The seminars are scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. each night at the following locations (each seminar will feature the same program): Tuesday, Aug. 9, Sandston Branch Library, 23 E. Williamsburg Road; Wednesday, Aug. 10, Tuckahoe Area Library, 1901 Starling Drive; and Thursday, Aug. 11, Twin Hickory Area Library, 5001 Twin Hickory Road.

Henrico wins 22 national awards for programs

Henrico County recently received 22 Achievement awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo), more than any Virginia county and sixth-most nationally. The awards were announced at the 2011 NACo annual conference, held July 15-19 in Portland, Ore.

The NACo Achievement Award Program recognizes groundbreaking county government programs annually in a broad range of service areas, including education, administration, parks and recreation, health and human services.

Henrico now has led Virginia counties in NACo Achievement awards for six straight years. The county trailed only major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, San Diego and Miami Dade counties in the 2011 competition. Henrico programs have received 171 NACo awards since 2000.

System upgrades affecting Henrico Alert System messaging services

Recent system upgrades may be affecting text and email messages sent to subscribers of the Henrico Alert System, the county’s free, text-based notification network that delivers bulletins regarding inclement weather and other emergency situations to wireless devices and email addresses.

County officials are encouraging users to sign into their accounts at http://www.henricoalert.org to confirm their wireless devices are registered correctly and activated. Users can reactivate devices that have been disabled in error by following instructions under the “Devices” tab.

Reid named director of Henrico’s department of human resources

Henrico County Manager Virgil Hazelett today announced that Paula G. Reid had been named director of the county's department of Human Resources, effective July 16.

Reid, who currently serves as the department’s acting director, is succeeding George H. Cauble, Jr., who retired recently after 25 years in the position.

As director of Human Resources, Reid will head an agency with more than 50 staff and a total budget of $5.5 million for the 2012 fiscal year. Human Resources is responsible for managing and implementing the county’s comprehensive personnel program for more than 4,000 general government employees.

Henrico Extension to offer vegetable gardening classes this month

Henrico residents interested in learning how to start their own vegetable garden can attend free classes offered by the Henrico County Extension Office throughout July. Classes are scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m.:

• “Starting a Fall Garden,” Tuesday, July 5 and Tuesday, July 19 at Belmont Recreation Center, 1600 Hilliard Road; and Thursday, July 7 at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive;

State launches broadband map

Wondering where you can pick up broadband services in Virginia – or which providers offer service at your home or office? Virginia officials this week announced the launch of a new online map that provides that information.

The broadband availability map is available online at http://www.wired.virginia.gov. It was developed from data provided by broadband service providers and other sources is a collaborative effort of the Center for Innovative Technology, The Virginia Information Technologies Agency’s Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN), and Virginia Tech’s eCorridors Program.

Henrico names Winstead to head General Services

Henrico County's new director of General Services is Christopher L. Winstead, who will begin in his new role July 16. Henrico County Manager Virgil Hazelett made the announcement earlier today.

Winstead, who currently serves as assistant director of Henrico’s Department of Public Works, is succeeding Paul N. Proto, who retired recently after 20 years in the position.

As director of General Services, Winstead will lead an agency that provides a broad range of services in support of general government and Henrico County Public Schools operations.

Henrico libraries offer downloadable materials

Henrico County Public Library has expanded its digital content services with eBooks and eAudiobooks available as free downloads to a computer or mobile device from the library’s website through OverDrive.
