JUNE 23, 10:30 A.M. – The Henrico County School Board Thursday concluded its latest redistricting process by selecting a plan for middle school redistricting that will impact a number of students in the western and northern parts of the county, as well as a few in Eastern Henrico.

The process sought to reduce overcrowding at Hungary Creek Middle School, create room at Wilder Middle School for a gifted academy and address the poverty level disparity among some middle schools. It will impact about 775 students, according to school system officials.

Law promotes alternatives to suspending students

Suspension from school long has been linked to academic failure. Students are away from the classroom for up to several days, missing out on material taught in class and falling behind. Meanwhile, assignments pile up, making a difficult situation even worse.

A new state law will encourage Virginia schools to seek alternatives to suspensions in dealing with students who misbehave. The law, which takes effect July 1, directs the Virginia Board of Education to “establish guidelines for alternatives to short-term and long-term suspension for consideration by local school boards. Such alternatives may include positive behavior incentives, mediation, peer-to-peer counseling, community service, and other intervention alternatives.”

The 2017 Summer Leadership Retreat is sponsored by Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety and the Virginia State Police and is funded by a grant from the Virginia DMV Highway Safety Office.

Henrico teacher wins Lottery’s ‘Thank a Teacher’ campaign

Thousands of Virginia educators received a thank-you note in the Virginia Lottery’s “Thank a Teacher” campaign, but Sarah Stultz of Ruby Carver Elementary School in Henrico received that and a lot more.

Stultz won a four-day, three-night Virginia-themed vacation courtesy of the Lottery and the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Her name was drawn from nearly 5,000 teachers who entered their thank-you notes in the prize drawing. On June 6, Virginia Lottery officials surprised her at the school with the good news. The fifth-grade teacher now has a choice of taking a beach-lovers, mountain-lovers or wine-lovers vacation.
