Publix to purchase 7 of 8 Henrico Martin’s stores

JULY 13 – Florida-based Publix will acquire 10 of 19 Martin’s stores in the Metro Richmond area – including all but one of the Henrico stores – the company announced tonight.

The parent company of Martin’s and Giant, Ahold USA Inc., is selling the stores to satisfy Federal Trade Commission requirements related to its pending merger with Food Lion parent company Delhaize Group.

The Henrico stores to be purchased by Publix, pending FTC approval, are located at:

• 7035 Three Chopt Road, in The Village shopping center;
• 9645 West Broad Street, in the Westpark shopping center;
• 10150 Brook Road, across from Virginia Center Commons;
• 10250 Staples Mill Road, in the Crossridge shopping center;
• 2250 John Rolfe Parkway;
• 3460 Pump Road, in the Short Pump Crossing shopping center;
• 4591 South Laburnum Avenue, in The Shops at White Oak shopping center.

The only Henrico Martin’s that is not part of the deal is the one located at 5700 Brook Road, in the Brook Run Shopping Center. Ahold USA will continue to market the remaining nine Martin’s stores to other potential buyers.

The 10 Martin’s locations that are being sold will continue to operate until the Publix permitting process is completed. Grand opening dates for all locations will depend on the scope of the remodels and completion of the stores’ construction, according to Publix officials.

“Acquiring these 10 locations aligns with Publix’s aggressive growth plan for the commonwealth of Virginia,” Publix CEO and President Todd Jones said. “We are looking forward to providing Virginians with the high-quality service and products our customers have come to expect and have earned us recognition throughout the industry.”

Publix will not automatically retain existing Martin’s employees but instead intends to hold job fairs and is encouraging impacted Martin’s employees to apply.

Publix, based in Lakeland, Fla., operates 1,128 stores in six Southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. It recently announced plans to build a new store just off Nuckols Road in the Far West End on a site once intended for a Ukrop’s location. That store never materialized because the Ukrop’s chain was sold to Ahold USA, which decided not to build there.
