4th Congressional District Republican forum planned Tuesday

Henrico Sheriff Mike Wade and Chesterfield resident Jackee Gonzalez – the two candidates seeking the Republican nomination to run for the newly redrawn 4th Congressional District seat in November – will meet at a candidate forum June 7 at the Eastern Henrico Government Center.

The 90-minute event will begin at 7 p.m. and will be moderated by Henrico Republican Party Chairman Eddie Whitlock.

The winner of the June 14 Republican primary will face the winner of the Democratic primary that same day between Virginia state Senator Donald McEachin and Chesapeake City Council member Ella Ward.

Voters in the district are free to vote in either primary but cannot vote in both. A three-judge panel redrew the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th districts in January after ruling twice in 2012 that the 3rd District contained too many black voters, thereby diluting their influence in surrounding districts. The new district boundaries place blacks more evenly in several districts.

Northern and Eastern Henrico County now fall in the 4th District, while the county's western half remains in the 7th District, served by Republican Dave Brat.

Current 4th District representative Randy Forbes, a Republican, is giving up his seat to run in the newly redrawn 2nd District instead.
