Fire leaves one dead, one injured in Sandston

One person died and another is in critical condition following an early morning fire in Sandston.

The fire occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Mary Street, near the intersection of Hanover Road and East Nine Mile Road. Dispatchers received the call and information that the two people were trapped inside.

The first Henrico Fire crews to arrive spotted heavy fire from a room on the right side of the house and made rescue attempts while fire-fighting operations began. They pulled the two adults, a man and a woman, from the home. Both were suffering from cardiac arrest and were transported to MCV. The male was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, and the female is listed in critical condition.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control shortly before 3 a.m.

One firefighter suffered a cut to his left arm while removing glass from a window for ventilation. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released.

The Fire Marshall’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
