Henrico home sales continue on strong pace


The number of homes sold in Henrico County in August rose 10 percent when compared to the same month last year, according to data compiled by Long & Foster. The average sale price of those homes – $239,975 – also rose, by about 4 percent when compared to the same average sale price in August 2016.

Henrico's jump in the number of homes sold was the largest in the Richmond region, though average sales prices in Chesterfield (8 percent increase) and Richmond (12 percent) jumped by higher amounts when compared to last August sales.

Thoracic surgeon is first to perform 100 robot-assisted lobectomies in Central Virginia


Graham M. Bundy, a thoracic surgeon with HCA Virginia Physicians’ Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates, is the first such surgeon in Central Virginia to perform 100 minimally-invasive Da Vinci robot-assisted lobectomies (a surgical procedure to remove a lobe of the lung). The procedure is used to treat multiple types of conditions but is most often used to treat lung cancer.

UMFS has urgent need for foster parents


UMFS officials say they have a desperate need for more foster families in the Richmond region and Central Virginia, especially those who would receive teenagers currently in the foster care system.

In recent years throughout the state, the number of children entering the foster care system has grown.

Henrico’s ‘NASA @ My Library’ program begins this summer

A new partnership with NASA will begin this summer at all Henrico County public libraries.

Each library will receive resources from the NASA @ My Library program, although the Central, Eastern Henrico, Libbie Mill and Varina libraries will receive more, since they are more equipped to deal with large scale programs. The program is designed to make it easier for Henrico residents in low-income areas to access STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and learning opportunities.

5 Henrico students finalists in scholar-athlete scholarship program

Five out of 20 finalists chosen for the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Scholarship are Henrico County Public high school students. The student finalists will be honored at the 26th annual Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner June 5, at 6 p.m. at the Jefferson Hotel.

The program is awarding more than $65,000 in college scholarships to the 20 student athletes as well as awards to the male and female HCA Virginia Sports Medicine Comeback Athletes of Year and Williams Mullen Team of the Year awards.

Rabid fox bites woman in Northern Henrico

A fox that bit a woman on her leg May 26 in northern Henrico has tested positive for rabies.

The incident occurred near Richmond International Raceway, in the 3800 block of Vawter Avenue. The woman was bitten in a yard, and Henrico Police located the fox in a nearby yard. Animal Protection officials took the fox and submitted it to the state lab for testing.
