UR football coach Scott resigns
Citizen Staff Reports 08/23/11
University of Richmond head football coach Latrell Scott has resigned today, after being charged with driving while intoxicated earlier today in Henrico County and refusing a breathalyzer and blood test.
Scott, a Midlothian resident, faces a hearing Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. in Henrico County General District Court. The DWI charge is Scott's second in a 5-10 year period, according to the Virginia Courts Case Information website.
"Earlier today, Coach Scott announced his resignation as Head Football Coach at the University of Richmond," UR Athletic Director Jim Miller wrote in a memo to athletic department staff members, announcing the move. "I would like to thank Latrell for his years of service at the University of Richmond and wish him the best as he pursues other endeavors."
The Spiders went 6-5 last year in Scott's only year as head coach. The team opens its 2011 season at Duke Sept. 3.
"Although the timing and circumstances of his resignation are unfortunate, I am optimistic that our football coaching staff and student-athletes will have a successful year," Miller said in the memo. "Wayne Lineburg has been named Interim Head Football Coach. I know you will support Wayne and our assistant coaches as they lead the football student-athletes through this transitional period."
