RIR offers public track time

Richmond International Raceway is offering local residents a number of opportunities to take their personal vehicles onto the racetrack for five laps, in exchange for a $20 donation to RIR Cares, the track's charitable account that assists a number of local nonprofit organizations. RIR assisted nonprofits in raising more than $300,000 through donations and volunteer opportunities in 2011.

The RIR Cares Track Laps program will host eight "open track" opportunities (one each month) beginning Wednesday, March 7, at noon. Subsequent dates are: Wednesday, Apr. 4 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, May 9 at 5 p.m.; Sunday, June 10 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, July 11 at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 12 p.m.

Eligible drivers must be 18 years or older and have a valid state-issued driver's license. Drivers will follow the RIR pace car at all times and not exceed 55 mph. Motorcycles are permitted.

Drivers must register in advance by calling (804) 228-7500 or e-mailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
