University of Michigan freshman golfer Chris O'Neill, a Deep Run High School graduate, was named the Big Ten conference Golfer of the Week Oct. 17, following his career-best performance at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 15-16. It is the first conference accolade of his career.

O'Neill, who tied for 14th individually at the MacKenzie Invitational, recorded his second top-20 and lowered his career-best 54-hole tournament total by eight shots with his three-under 210. He bettered the 218 he posted earlier this season at the Windon Memorial Classic, held Sept. 23-24.

En route to the career-best tally, he carded a career-best two-under 69 in the first round, following with a one-under 70 in the second and an even-par 71 in the third. All three of his rounds at the MacKenzie Invitational topped his previous career-best round total of 72 shot in the first and second rounds of the Windon Memorial Classic.

Overall, O'Neill's three-under 210 is the lowest 54-hole event total by a freshman since Joey Garber posted a four-under 209 in the 2011 NCAA Central Regional -- a span of 16 tournaments.
