April RIR tickets go on sale Jan. 14

Tickets for Richmond International Raceway’s April 28-30 NASCAR tripleheader weekend are available for purchase beginning Jan. 14 at 8:30 a.m. To purchase seats, visit http://www.rir.com call ,866-455-RACE (7223) or visit the ticket office at 600 E. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23222. Ticket office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fans who purchase tickets Jan. 14 at the ticket office will receive a complimentary Richmond International Raceway souvenir from past race events.

This season features three new policies:
• larger coolers permitted: Fans are permitted to enter the grandstands with soft-sided coolers measuring up to 14 x 14 x 14 inches—six times the size of coolers that were previously allowed; fans may continue to bring in their own food and beverages.

• wider seats: Nearly all of Richmond International Raceway’s grandstand seats now measure 22 inches wide.

• non-smoking grandstands: Smoking is not allowed in and in front of the grandstands, or in portals leading to seating. Smoking is permitted underneath and behind the grandstands, on the Midway, in all parking lots, among other areas.

The Saturday, April 30 Crown Royal Presents The Your Name Here 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race marks Denny Hamlin’s return to Richmond International Raceway following his runner-up finish in the 2010 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Hamlin will attempt to win back-to-back races at America’s Premier Short Track following his victory on Sept. 11 this past season. Tickets start at $45.

The Spring 2011 NASCAR Tripleheader Weekend begins with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race on Thursday, April 28, followed by the BUBBA burger 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race “under the lights” on Friday, April 29. Friday’s events include practice and pole qualifying for both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series.

All seats for Thursday’s race are general admission and $10. Tickets for Friday’s events start at $30 in advance. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult in general admission seating on Thursday and Friday.

Agencies combine on new entry point to Chickahominy


Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.

The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years. > Read more.

Equestrian clinic planned July 7-8 in Henrico

Henrico equestrians interested in deepening the bond between themselves and their horses have the opportunity to attend a two day clinic, held at Steppin’ High Stables on July 7-8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic, “Become Partners with your Horse,” will be taught by multiple world champion equestrienne Terry Preiser and will focus on how riders and horses can work together to achieve more. > Read more.

Henrico school bus driver honored

The Henrico-based Hephaestus Society recently awarded its first annual community heroes award (the Hephaestus Award) to Hicham Elgharouch (pictured, center) for what it termed his "selfless acts of caring" in his duties as a Henrico County Public Schools bus driver. Henrico County Director of Pupil Transportation Josh Davis, joined Hephaestus Society President Travis Gardner, in presenting the award and an accompanying $1,500 check to Elgharouch last month.

Elgharouch was selected for his clear and demonstrated patience and for his infectious positive attitude, according to the society. > Read more.
