Game to raise funds for Buddy Ball program
|
Citizen Staff Reports 04/29/11
Two top high school baseball teams will face each other tomorrow night in Glen Allen in a game that will be about more than winning and losing.
Benedictine and St. Christopher's – each ranked in the top three in the Virginia Independent Schools poll – will meet at 7 p.m. at Glen Allen's RF&P Stadium at RF&P Park. Admission to the game is free, but fans who attend are asked to donate funds for the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association's Buddy Ball program, which enables disabled children and teens to play baseball. Funds raised will allow officials with the Buddy Ball Program to purchase new equipment and also fund scholarships, which are used to offset costs to send some of the program’s children to summer camps. Players from both Benedictine and St. Christopher's will volunteer Saturday morning at a Buddy Ball Game, and Buddy Ball players will join the teams on the field prior to the start of the evening game for pre-game ceremonies. Last year, nearly 1,000 fans attended the game and we raised nearly $2,000 for Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association’s Buddy Ball program, which enables disabled children and teens to play baseball. Benedictine is 16-3 this season, ranked No. 1 in the VIS poll and No. 8 in the Richmond Times-Dispatch poll, while St. Christopher’s is 14-4, No. 3 in the VIS poll and No. 9 in the Times-Dispatch poll. The two schools have combined to make six appearances in the state title game during the past six years, including last year, when they faced each other.
