Hornets sign first-ever female football player

A local semi-pro football team has signed its first female player.

Henrico County native and Deep Run High School graduate Sarah Bradley successfully tried out and was selected to the team at a recent Virginia Hornets tryout.

Bradley, who was initially motivated to play football by a classmate’s suggestion, honed her technique under Collegiate High School coach Larry Jarman at the Collegiate Kicking Camp. Chris Woody, one of the newest additions to the Virginia Hornets coaching staff, was Bradley's main inspiration to try out for Deep Run's team; she also credits another Deep Run coach, Gary Chilcoat, with inspiring her to continue her place-kicking career. After making the DRHS team as a senior, Bradley amassed 23 extra points and four field goals, the longest from 38 yards.

Until she was sidelined by a knee injury, Bradley planned on attending Bridgewater College to play soccer and place kick for the football team. Instead, after a brief stint as a Division III soccer player at Roanoke College, she returned home to finish rehabbing her knee.

She was discovered by coincidence when the Virginia Hornets staff was scheduling 2011 tryouts at SCOR Sport Center of Richmond, where Bradley currently works.

After her initial season with the Hornets, Bradley is considering trying out for arena football. Off the field, Bradley is involved with the Hornet’s REACH program, which offers youth mentoring on health, education and discipline under the guidance of coach Clifford “Perk” Jefferson.

Bradley and the Hornets will play in their annual Charity Flag Football Game for Special Olympics on May 21 against the Virginia State Police. The Virginia Hornets regular season home opener will kick off July 23 at the team’s new home field, Richmond City Stadium.
