Babe Ruth 13U World Series arrives in Glen Allen

Teams from nine states will join the host team from the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series this week at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park.

The teams arrived Aug. 14 and gathered for a banquet; an opening ceremony will be held at the stadium Aug. 15, and play will begin the following day.

In total, the event will bring about 350 youth baseball players, coaches and family members to Henrico County.

The GAYAA team will compete with teams from Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and Montana. > Read more.

RIR September race tickets go on sale May 23

Tickets to NASCAR's September race weekend at Richmond International Raceway will go on sale to the general public Friday, May 23.

The weekend will feature the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Saturday, Sept. 6, which sets the field for the Sprint Cup Series' Chase for the Sprint Cup, locking in the drivers who areeligible for the season title. > Read more.

Arena Racing USA seeking donations to ‘Tickets for Troops’

Henrico-based Arena Racing USA, in partnership with USO Hampton Roads Central Virginia (USOHRCV), earlier this year launched "Tickets for Troops," a program to connect corporate and individual ticket sponsors with area military channels. USOHRCV is not the only recipient of the “Tickets for Troops” program; Arena Racing USA donates sponsored tickets to organizations such as: Fisher House Richmond, Fort Lee MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation), McGuire Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Air Force Training Squadron, and we continue to build relationships with other military-focused organizations and bases. > Read more.

HCPS to stream Friday’s Varina-Highland Springs football game

Didn't get a ticket to the sold-out Varina-Highland Springs football game Friday night? You can still watch the game online, thanks to Henrico County Public Schools. HCPS-TV will stream the game live through its website, http://www.henrico.k12.va.us Varin.a enters the game 8-1, while Highland Springs is 7-2. NOVA swimmers win 13th straight Va. Swimming Long Course title

NOVA of Virginia, a Henrico-based swim program, recently won the Virginia Swimming Long Course age group championship for a 13th consecutive time.

NOVA sent 110 swimmers to the Christiansburg, Va., competition, where they broke six Virginia records and seven meet records. > Read more.

Knitters unite at Cedarfield

The “Knitters of Cedarfield” made their annual donation of handmade caps to the Henrico Christmas Mother Dec. 3 at The Hermitage at Cedarfield, presenting 130 knitted caps to be used by needy families. Among the Christmas Mothers on hand to accept the donation and thank the knitters were Mitty Sledd (1975), Sue Trimmer (1998), Bonnie Abernathy (2011), and Terry Brady (2012). The presentation was followed by a program of holiday music, courtesy of the Greater Richmond Chorus. > Read more.

Hat trick for Henrico man

At the annual meeting of the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VASWCD), held Dec. 4 in Roanoke, Henrico resident Donald O. “Spec” Campen (at right in photo, with grandson Kristopher Burnette) was honored with the 2012 E.C. Compton Meritorious Achievement Award. A former chairman of the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Henrico County, Campen has been involved with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts for 34 years. He has also served as AREA III Chairman of the VASWCD, been a member of the state association’s legislative committee for 24 years, and headed committees involved with Chesapeake Bay corrective efforts. > Read more.

Burgers, by the ‘Bach’

Popular Carytown restaurant opens West Broad Village location
I’ve never cared for burgers, and I’ve certainly never sought out a restaurant specialized in the sandwich. That’s until I ventured into Burger Bach (pronounced batch) in Carytown. The New Zealand-inspired gastropub made a believer out of a burger-skeptic like me with its gourmet burgers, handcut fries and homemade dipping sauces.

It’s not surprising that others loved it, too, and its second location opened in West Broad Village in November. Eager to compare the two, I headed over for lunch on a Saturday with a friend and an empty stomach. > Read more.
