Athlete of the Week – May 22: John Woolley

Douglas Freeman H.S., varsity boys’ lacrosse

John Woolley, attacker for Freeman High School’s lacrosse team, knows that he only has a few games left in his high school career. The 18-year old senior hopes that one of those games is the state championship.

Woolley said all season long his coaches have preached “peaking late,” viewing every game, win or loss, as a stepping stone toward the state tournament.

On May 12, the Rebels faced Atlee in a matchup of the two best public school lacrosse teams in the area and what was a likely preview to a playoff matchup coming next week. Freeman staged a comeback after being down four goals in the third quarter and won the game 14-11. > Read more.

Game to raise funds for Buddy Ball program

Two top high school baseball teams will face each other tomorrow night in Glen Allen in a game that will be about more than winning and losing.

Benedictine and St. Christopher's – each ranked in the top three in the Virginia Independent Schools poll – will meet at 7 p.m. at Glen Allen's RF&P Stadium at RF&P Park. > Read more.

NASCAR crew competes with fans in bagging challenge

Members of the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil crew and local Virginia media personalities paired up at the Kroger store in Short Pump on Thursday to compete in a ‘Tailgating Cook off,’ where the No. 22 crew members barbecued burgers for customers to sample for the chance of being selected the ‘People’s Choice’ winning team. > Read more.

Hornets sign first-ever female football player

A local semi-pro football team has signed its first female player.

Henrico County native and Deep Run High School graduate Sarah Bradley successfully tried out and was selected to the team at a recent Virginia Hornets tryout.

Bradley, who was initially motivated to play football by a classmate’s suggestion, honed her technique under Collegiate High School coach Larry Jarman at the Collegiate Kicking Camp. > Read more.

RIR to host Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown in April

Richmond International Raceway and Chesterfield, Virginia’s Denny Hamlin are joining forces to run the fourth annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown to benefit the Denny Hamlin Foundation on Thursday night, April 28. The event will feature several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers and celebrities battling it out on the ¾-mile track with some of the best local Late Model Stock Car drivers. > Read more.

Flying Squirrels seek help naming their ‘nut’

The Richmond Flying Squirrels recently announced plans for a new acorn mascot that will serve as a sidekick to Nutzy and are asking fans to vote on the name. Fans can vote online through the poll question at http://www.squirrelsbaseball.com or through the Flying Squirrels' iPhone application. Feeding those in need

For two days recently, hundreds of eager volunteers packed more than 140,000 meals for malnourished kids in the developing world. Through a partnership with the non-profit organization Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), volunteers from the Short Pump area scooped, bagged, weighed, sealed and boxed life-saving fortified rice and soy protein meals at Gayton Baptist Church.

The 387-gram “Manna Pack Rice” packs were shipped to the FMSC warehouse to be distributed to countries where children are malnourished or simply do not have enough food to survive. > Read more.

W. Richmond Rotary donates $28,000

The Rotary Club of West Richmond recently presented UMFS with donations of $28,000 raised during the December Nutzy Rotary Funn Run. Something seems fishy

The Richmond Antique Extravaganza Show and Sale brought antiques and rare collectibles to Henrico for the 28th year Jan. 17-19 at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The event attracted more than 80 dealers from Florida to New England, offering old prints, China, toys, children books and small furniture pieces among many others.
