SunTrust to sponsor raceways’s military appreciation program


JULY 31, 10:15 A.M. – Richmond Raceway and SunTrust Banks, Inc. today announced that the financial institution would sponsor the raceway's military appreciation program for the fall NASCAR race weekend, presented by Who’s Your Driver.

The "Military Appreciation Program presented by SunTrust" will feature an opportunity for fans to visit the SunTrust “onUp on Tour” pop-up entertainment experience that inspires visitors to learn about finances through interactive, sports-based activities.

Code Lacrosse joins Richmond Strikers


The Code Lacrosse youth program has joined the Richmond Strikers and will be rebranded as Richmond Strikers Boys Lacrosse, the two programs announced June 19.

Code Lacrosse, founded in 2010, hosts teams for boys in elementary and middle school.

Jordan Clevey will run the day-to-day operations as the director of the program, while Code Lacrosse's director, Steve Ceperich, will provide program oversight as the director of development and coaching.

5 Henrico student-athletes win scholarships at awards dinner

Five Henrico student-athletes were among 20 from the region honored with scholarships at the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at The Jefferson Hotel June 5.

The program, now in its 26th year, honors local scholar-athletes for their athletic, academic and extracurricular achievements. Since the program's inception in 1992, more than $1 million in scholarship money has been awarded to 514 outstanding student-athletes from the Richmond region.

Coaching legend Bobby Ross to speak at Hermitage H.S.

Richmond coaching legend Bobby Ross will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Touchdown Club of Richmond, to be held at Hermitage High School Oct. 10. Club members will meet in the library at 6 p.m. for dinner and Ross will speak at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

HSHS football team competes Friday for national win

Fan votes can help Springers win
Highland Springs High School will compete for a $2,500 scholarship this Friday in <>Friday Night Football<>, a national competition sponsored by Southern Recipe pork rinds.

This Friday, the community can also help the team win by voting for Highland Springs H.S. at the game (7 p.m. at Victor W. Kreiter Stadium, 15 South Oak Ave.) or online at VotePorkRinds.com.

RIR to retain two-race schedule in 2012

Richmond International Raceway will again host two NASCAR weekends – and two Sprint Cup Series races – in 2012, track officials announced today.

Next year's Sprint Cup races will be held April 28 and Sept. 8. The track also will host Nationwide Series races April 27 and Sept. 7 and a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race April 26.

UR football coach Scott resigns

University of Richmond head football coach Latrell Scott has resigned today, after being charged with driving while intoxicated earlier today in Henrico County and refusing a breathalyzer and blood test.

Scott, a Midlothian resident, faces a hearing Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. in Henrico County General District Court. The DWI charge is Scott's second in a 5-10 year period, according to the Virginia Courts Case Information website.

Glen Allen hosting Babe Ruth 14-year-old World Series

Henrico County and the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association are hosting the 2011 Babe Ruth Baseball 14-Year-Old World Series at the Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park on Mountain Road today through next Friday.

The 10-team event begins tonight with an opening banquet at Glen Allen High School at 5 p.m. followed by opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. and a home run derby at 8:30 p.m. at RF&P Park.
