Teams from nine states will join the host team from the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series this week at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park.
The teams arrived Aug. 14 and gathered for a banquet; an opening ceremony will be held at the stadium Aug. 15, and play will begin the following day.
In total, the event will bring about 350 youth baseball players, coaches and family members to Henrico County.
The GAYAA team will compete with teams from Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and Montana. > Read more.

Nine-year-old Henrico resident Alexandra Perkins won her third consecutive 10-under girls tennis tournament on the Richmond Junior Tournament Circuit earlier this month at the Steward School, defeating Kayli Shenk 6-5 (9-7 tiebreaker) in the final.
The RJTC is a summer-long series of 13 one-day tennis tournaments for young players who are new to competitive tennis. Sponsored by the
Association of Richmond Tennis Professionals with support from the Richmond Tennis Association, the events feature play on 36-foot, 60-foot and standard 78-foot tennis courts using red, orange, and green tennis balls (depending upon age division). > Read more.

Saint Gertrude High School will offer several athletic camps for girls this summer at its Outdoor Athletic Center in Henrico, including softball (June 17-21 and August 5-8) and field hockey (June 17-21; Weed Wackers Field Hockey for third- through fifth-graders Aug. 5-8). The SGHS Outdoor Athletic Center is located at 500 Scott Road off North Parham Road. Sports camps to be held on the school campus on Stuart Avenue in Richmond's Museum District include basketball (July 15-19) and volleyball (July 29-Aug. 2). > Read more.

Businessman Royce Mulholland (pictured at left) donated $6,000 to the Henrico High School boys basketball state championship ring fund during a small ceremony at the school April 11. Mulholland, who owns several properties near the school, told the team’s players that he wanted to help them commemorate their title and also empower them with the responsibility to take the same championship attitude and demeanor with them off the court during the rest of their lives. Henrico cruised to its first state championship by beating John Marshall in March. > Read more.

NOVA of Virginia Aquatics will host its annual Swim-A-Thon on Saturday, April 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the NOVA Aquatics Center in western Henrico. During the event, swimmers will have a two-hour period in which to swim a maximum of 200 lengths, or about three miles. Donors are encouraged to support the athletes either via a flat donation or by pledging a certain amount of money per length that the swimmer completes. The fundraising goal for the 2013 Swim-A-Thon is $55,000. > Read more.

The Henrico High School boys’ basketball team will face John Marshall in the state championship game Friday night at VCU's Siegel Center, with tip-off expected at 9 p.m. The Warriors, champions of the Central District and Central Region, already have defeated John Marshall twice this year, winning in an in-season tournament and also in the Central Region championship game last week.
It will be the first time in Virginia High School League history that two Central Region teams have met for the state championship. > Read more.

Thanks in part to a $10,000 gift from the Western Henrico Rotary Club, another bright pink Jeep modified to travel extremely rough terrain has been delivered to Midwives For Haiti so that more pregnant women in the quake-ravaged country will have access to prenatal care and a greater chance of surviving childbirth.
The funds were raised at the annual casino night held in February, club president Adam Cherry said. The Rotary Club also helped purchase the Virginia-based charity’s first pink jeep three years ago. > Read more.
Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.
The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years. > Read more.

Henrico equestrians interested in deepening the bond between themselves and their horses have the opportunity to attend a two day clinic, held at Steppin’ High Stables on July 7-8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic, “Become Partners with your Horse,” will be taught by multiple world champion equestrienne Terry Preiser and will focus on how riders and horses can work together to achieve more. > Read more.
A finalist in the Bravo television show Top Chef is bringing one of his four restaurant chains to Henrico County.
Bryan Voltaggio, who was the runner-up of the sixth season of Top Chef, (finishing second to his brother, Michael) and his business partner, Hilda Staples, will open their third Family Meal restaurant, at Henrico's Willow Lawn shopping center. The restaurant is expected to open early next year. > Read more.
The United States Army Field Band will present a free public performance at Deep Run Park in Henrico on Sunday, Aug 3 at 3 p.m.
Members of the band are soldiers who also serve as “musical ambassadors of the Army” and perform for schools and communities nationwide.
