Athlete of the Week – March 27: Walter Williams

Walter Williams cried tears of joy after Henrico won the 5A boys basketball state championship. The 6-foot-4 senior guard had come a long way since failing off of the team as a freshman.

“It was a very humbling experience that not everybody could say they have, to be state champs,” said Williams.

Williams scored 37 points against Bird in the region’s semi-finals, including the shot that sent the game into overtime at the buzzer. That shot incited wild celebration, and the crowd spilled onto the court. Henrico went on to win in double-overtime. > Read more.

RIR to host Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown in April

Richmond International Raceway and Chesterfield, Virginia’s Denny Hamlin are joining forces to run the fourth annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown to benefit the Denny Hamlin Foundation on Thursday night, April 28. The event will feature several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers and celebrities battling it out on the ¾-mile track with some of the best local Late Model Stock Car drivers. > Read more.

Flying Squirrels seek help naming their ‘nut’

The Richmond Flying Squirrels recently announced plans for a new acorn mascot that will serve as a sidekick to Nutzy and are asking fans to vote on the name. Fans can vote online through the poll question at http://www.squirrelsbaseball.com or through the Flying Squirrels' iPhone application. Hermitage’s Grant commits to Ohio State

Hermitage High School senior linebacker Curtis Grant – rated the No. 2 prospect in the nation – announced today that he will play for the Ohio State University.

Grant's decision ended months of speculation about where he would play collegiately and dashed the hopes of University of Virginia fans, who hoped he would select the Cavaliers. Grant had narrowed his choices to Ohio State, UVA, Florida and North Carolina. > Read more.

RIR grandstands to become smoke-free

Richmond International Raceway president Doug Fritz announced today that Richmond International Raceway’s grandstands will be smoke-free beginning this season. Fans who smoke may continue to do so, but in approved areas only. The new policy is in response to fan feedback, Fritz said. > Read more.

‘Go Red For Women’ seeks heart-healthy woman nominations

The American Heart Association’s "Go Red For Women" movement, along with Macy’s, Bon Secours Heart and Vascular Institute and HDL, Inc. will host a Go Red Total Makeover event on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Macy’s Short Pump Town Center from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to spotlight one local heart-healthy woman who is in the process of making herself over from the inside out. The organizations are seeking nominees through Jan. 27.

Nominees should be female residents within the greater Richmond community who have taken action to improve their heart health. > Read more.

Henrico PAL hosting winter clothes drive

The Henrico Police Athletic League (Henrico PAL) is conducting a winter clothes drive to benefit Henrico youngsters in need this winter. From now through Jan. 31, the organization is collecting coats, hats, gloves and socks at its main office, located at 8655 Staples Mill Road, near Parham Road. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All clothing will be distributed through Henrico County Schools to students in need. > Read more.

James River Ringers to hold auditions Jan. 13

The James River Ringers will hold open auditions for their 2014-15 performance season on Monday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m., at Church of the Epiphany Episcopal, 8000 Hermitage Road. Those interested will be asked to ring a variety of positions during a format typical of a regular rehearsal. Potential candidates must be able to read music, demonstrate a good sense of rhythm and have a good work ethic. While prior experience ringing is helpful, it is not necessary. > Read more.

CAT Theatre to host auditions

CAT Theatre will hold auditions for Book of Days on Sunday, Oct. 26 and Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. each day. Auditions will be held at CAT Theatre, 319 North Wilkinson Road in Henrico. Book of Days will run Jan. 23-Feb. 7 and is one of CAT’s submissions to the Acts of Faith Festival.

Book of Days, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lanford Wilson is an exploration of faith, justice, and corruption, amidst the backdrop of murder – and community theatre – in small town America. Book of Days was first written for and produced by Jeff Daniels Purple Rose Theatre Company of Michigan.

Director Leslie Cline is seeking five females between the ages of 20-65 and seven males between the ages of 24-65. > Read more.

CAT Theatre opens 51st season Oct. 24


CAT Theatre’s 51st season will open with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which will run Oct. 24 through Nov. 8. The play is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and adapted by Steven Dietz, and was the winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.

The story follows Holmes, whose career as the world’s greatest detective seems to have reached its end until he is confronted with a case far too tempting to ignore. When the King of Bohemia faces blackmail by famed opera singer, Irene Adler, Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson find themselves falling into the trap of evil genius Professor Moriarty. > Read more.
