Athlete of the Week – July 3: Kayla Sell

Henrico H.S., girls volleyball
Kayla Sell, Henrico High School’s volleyball captain, has grown up around the sport. Her parents play on teams at the Richmond Volleyball Center, and Sell began playing there herself when she was 10. She played all four years at Henrico while playing on a club team as well.

“I just kind of grew up around the sport,” she said. Sell now also spends her evenings reffing adult league games at the RVC. “The volleyball community in Richmond is a great community. We’re inseparable,” she said.

Sell, who is 6-foot-4, was elected captain of her high school team in 10th grade. She said that one of the highlights of her high school career was watching her team grow in skill during the past four years. > Read more.

Athlete of the Week – June 19: Sydney Whitaker

Rachel Haslip, head coach of the Deep Run girls' lacrosse team, handed each of her players a puzzle piece one day after practice. Each piece had the girl's name written on it. When the girls assembled the puzzle, they saw the word that Haslip had emphasized all season long: one.

One, as in one team one unit, one goal, was the theme of this year's team. The team reached the state tournament, where it fell in the semi- finals to the eventual state champions, Stonebridge.

The message of unity had been issued by Haslip, and the team bought in, largely due to the skill and leadership of junior captain Sydney Whitaker. Whitaker laughed when describing the puzzle demonstration. > Read more.

Short Pump Rotary volunteers help with rebuild, repair

On June 13, the Short Pump Rotary Club partnered with Schnabel Engineering for a day of volunteer work with Rebuilding Together Richmond. Team members (among them [from left] Chris Rufe, Melissa Abraham, Rick Naschold, and Micky Ogburn) completed a variety of repairs and home improvements ranging from painting and landscaping to cabinet installation and fence building.

“It was a privilege to be involved in this project," said club president Melissa Abraham. "The homeowner kept thanking the volunteers, but I think all of us would agree we are the ones who actually benefited. It was an opportunity to help a community member, fellowship with great people and improve our handyman skills." > Read more.
