Richmond Strikers form girls lacrosse program

NOV. 25, 12:47 P.M. – The Richmond Strikers Soccer Club and the Richmond Rapids Lacrosse Club today announced the formation of Richmond Strikers Lacrosse, a girls lacrosse program that will provide travel teams and training opportunities for girls in grades 3-6.

"Richmond Strikers Lacrosse will elevate girls lacrosse in Central Virginia and will continue our focus on positive player and whole person development" commented Beatrice 'Bea' Cope, Former Director of Rapids Lacrosse and the new Director of Richmond Strikers Lacrosse. "The Rapids were drawn to the Richmond Strikers because of their 40 years of experience in youth sports programming, professional organizational support, top class facility management, and nationally recognized tournaments."

Richmond Strikers Lacrosse will be directed by Bea Cope, founder of the Richmond Rapids. Two Rapids coaches, Heather Strausburg and Libby Rosebro, will join the Richmond Strikers Lacrosse coaching staff. Cope, Strausburg and Rosebro have been involved with youth lacrosse in the region for a number of years. > Read more.

Dudley, Lanier Award Winners Honored

Coaches and players from the Orange-Bowl-bound Virginia Tech Hokies were in Henrico Dec. 7 as the annual Bill Dudley Award ceremony was held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa at Short Pump. Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor (pictured, second from right, next to VT Head Coach Frank Beamer) was named the winner of the Bill Dudley Award, which recognizes the best player in Division I football in the state. > Read more.

Squirrels Unveil ‘Comic’ Nutzy

The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, today unveiled two comic-themed images of Nutzy that will be featured across all of the club’s marketing and branding for the 2011 season.

“Nutzy has been one of the most identifiable members of the Flying Squirrels organization,” said Vice President and COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “From the moment we introduced him in February, he was an instant hit with adults and kids alike. As we prepare for our second season in Richmond, we want to build Nutzy’s celebrity status and making him the centerpiece of our branding will help accomplish that.” > Read more.

Highland Springs Community Center grand re-opening planned

The Henrico County Division of Recreation and Parks will dedicate Highland Springs Community Center, 16 Ivy Avenue, with a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 9.

The event is open to the public and will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature remarks by county officials, facility tours, children’s activities, exhibits and entertainment by Manny Green. > Read more.

‘Step UP for Down Syndrome’ festival scheduled for White Oak Village Oct. 12

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond (DSAGR) will hold its seventh annual Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Shops at White Oak Village in Eastern Henrico.

The annual fundraiser, which attracted more than 1,000 participants and raised more than $100,000 last year, features a 5K run/walk and a newly expanded free family festival that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of children, teens and adults with Down syndrome. > Read more.

CAT Theatre announces 2014 Tabby award winners

The Joshua Plant, which made its world premiere at CAT Theatre in January, took top honors at CAT’s 2014 Tabby Awards, held July 20. Written by Amy Berlin and P. Ann Bucci, The Joshua Plant was the winner of CAT's 50th Anniversary Original Play contest and was chosen from dozens of entries. The Joshua Plant began as a 10-minute play that was a finalist in the 2005 Chicago Dramatist Fall Ten Minute Workshop. Since then, it has had three developmental readings with Phoenix Theatre and a staged reading at the Pandora Festival, as well as a reading at the Richmond Public Library as part of the Richmond Writer's series. > Read more.
