RIR to admit children 12 and younger free next year


Richmond International Raceway will admit children 12 and younger free to all NASCAR XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series races beginning next year. The track already had been admitting children free to XFINITY series races and now is participating in an industry-wide effort to admit them free at Truck Series races as well.

The announcement, made Monday, was a part of a week-long youth initiative called Kids Drive NASCAR, highlighting the importance kids play in expanding the sport's reach. > Read more.

Henrico teams win district, state championships


Three Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association all-star baseball teams and two all star softball teams recently won state championships.

Two Tuckahoe Little League all-star teams also won district titles and advanced to their state tournaments, which were ongoing at press time.

The Glen Allen 10-year-old Cal Ripken League team (pictured above) went 5-0 in the state tournament, following a 3-0 run to the district title, and advanced to the Southeast Regional in Nashville, Tenn., which began this week. The team includes Will Kuimjian, Ben Rossi, James Hall, Justin Helberg, Ryan Bland, Ryan Lloyd, Cameron Slough, Parker Maughan, Will Hemp, Eli Ranson, Lee Sowers, Nate Boeckle and Chad Martin and is managed by Rebecca Slough and coached by Melvin Slough and Jeff Hemp. > Read more.

Varina HS to host Basketball Skill Development Academy June 20-23


In cooperation with the Henrico County Recreation and Parks, Varina High School will host the annual Basketball Skill Development Academy camp for boys and girls ages 7-17, June 20-23. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost for the four-day session is $60 per child.

The camp features basketball instruction in all phases of the game. Participants will learn the skills that will build the foundation for success in basketball and life. Campers are organized by age group and will participate in daily college style skill development workouts, contest and games. The camp closes Thursday with an awards ceremony. Deep Run’s Wharton named state soccer player of the year

Being named Gatorade Virginia Boys Soccer Player of the Year, maintaining a 4.79 weighted GPA and signing a National Letter of Intent to play soccer on an athletic scholarship at University of Virginia probably gives a high school student fair reason not to be humble, right? Wrong – at least for Todd Wharton, 18, of Deep Run High School.

“It meant a lot [to win the Gatorade award] because I know there’s a lot of good players in the state of Virginia,” Wharton said, “but I’m not interested in individual awards this year. It’s all about the team for me. I know it sounds cliche, but it is.”

Frank Ford, who serves as Wharton’s head coach at Deep Run HS, said his star player had worked hard his whole life and was incredibly humble. > Read more.

RIR offers public track time

Richmond International Raceway is offering local residents a number of opportunities to take their personal vehicles onto the racetrack for five laps, in exchange for a $20 donation to RIR Cares, the track's charitable account that assists a number of local nonprofit organizations. RIR assisted nonprofits in raising more than $300,000 through donations and volunteer opportunities in 2011.

The RIR Cares Track Laps program will host eight "open track" opportunities (one each month) beginning Wednesday, March 7, at noon. Subsequent dates are: Wednesday, Apr. 4 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, May 9 at 5 p.m.; Sunday, June 10 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, July 11 at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 12 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 12 p.m. > Read more.

Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.
