Varina HS to host Basketball Skill Development Academy June 20-23


In cooperation with the Henrico County Recreation and Parks, Varina High School will host the annual Basketball Skill Development Academy camp for boys and girls ages 7-17, June 20-23. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost for the four-day session is $60 per child.

The camp features basketball instruction in all phases of the game. Participants will learn the skills that will build the foundation for success in basketball and life. Campers are organized by age group and will participate in daily college style skill development workouts, contest and games. The camp closes Thursday with an awards ceremony. Strawberry visits Tuckahoe Little League


The Tuckahoe Sports' Titans baseball program hosted its inaugural lead-off banquet at the Hilton Short Pump Jan. 17, featuring former Major League Baseball superstar Darryl Strawberry as keynote speaker. The event focused on the organization's leadership group and community service projects.

Strawberry, who was an eight-time MLB all-star and four-time World Series champion, gave the keynote address. He urged attendees to be positive mentors, and to seek the advice of positive mentors, and to seek out their purpose in life while helping others along the way. He later signed autographs for all those in attendance.

Highland Springs High School claimed the Division 5A state football championship Dec. 12 with a 27-7 win against Stone Bridge in Charlottesville to complete a 14-1 season. The Springers’ last won the state football title in 1961. > Read more.

RIR to retain two-race schedule in 2012

Richmond International Raceway will again host two NASCAR weekends – and two Sprint Cup Series races – in 2012, track officials announced today.

Next year's Sprint Cup races will be held April 28 and Sept. 8. The track also will host Nationwide Series races April 27 and Sept. 7 and a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race April 26. > Read more.

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
