Athlete of the Week – April 24: Brooke Carter

Varina High School, varsity girls' soccer

Brooke Carter had not won a soccer game in more than two years. But on April 17, when Varina played Highland Springs, everything she had worked for as team captain came together. The Blue Devils left the field victorious by a score of 5-0 that day, and Carter contributed one goal and three assists. After the game, the team celebrated at Romaʼs restaurant.

A two-year losing streak and annual coaching changes (three coaches in three years) could damper the competitive fire of most athletes. But Carter took each loss over the two years as if it were the first.

“I get furious when we lose. The coach usually talks me down on the bus ride back home from losses,” she said. > Read more.

Tuckahoe Sports to start indoor co-ed softball league

Tuckahoe Sports has announced the first Indoor Co-Ed Adult Softball League of its kind in the region. The new 10-week league is designed to offer young and young-at-heart adults, ages 18 and over, an alternative to the standard slow-pitch softball league. This fast-paced version of softball allows players to enjoy playing on a leveled playing field, where home runs are nonexistent and everything is in play.

Weekly games are played at the TSI Training Center on Tuesday and Thursday nights and will start at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The league will start on August 7 and end October 11 with a one-day playoff for all teams on Saturday, Oct. 13. > Read more.

Wheelchair archers take aim at Dorey

Numerous competitors at last week’s National Veterans Wheelchair Games archery competition at Dorey Park in Varina were too good, repeatedly wearing out the bullseyes on their targets until those targets had to be exchanged among participants.

The competitors were among hundreds who came to Metro Richmond last month to compete in the games during a six-day span.

“Aside from the heat, it went off beautifully,”said Jane Walsh, the head official for the archery meet who was serving her 22nd year with the games.

Temperatures reached 98 degrees during the four hours of competition that began at about 8 a.m. June 28. > Read more.

Dorey to host rugby tournament June 9

The Richmond Lions Rugby Football Club will host its annual Monk Vaughan Sevens Tournament Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dorey Park in Varina.

The tournament is named for Vaughan and holds special meaning for the club.

“He was actually a player of our back in the 1970s who was hit by a drunk driver and killed,” Lions President Ben Morgan said. “It’s always been a non-drinking tournament in honor of that.”

The tournament will serve as a Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) qualifier, the third straight year it has held that distinction, according to Morgan. Teams must accumulate a certain amount of points in qualifiers throughout the summer season to qualify for the playoffs. The Mid-Atlantic is the Lions' designated region. > Read more.
