St. Gertrude to offer athletic camps in Henrico

Saint Gertrude High School will offer several athletic camps for girls this summer at its Outdoor Athletic Center in Henrico, including softball (June 17-21 and August 5-8) and field hockey (June 17-21; Weed Wackers Field Hockey for third- through fifth-graders Aug. 5-8). The SGHS Outdoor Athletic Center is located at 500 Scott Road off North Parham Road. Sports camps to be held on the school campus on Stuart Avenue in Richmond's Museum District include basketball (July 15-19) and volleyball (July 29-Aug. 2). > Read more.

Businessman makes ring donation

Businessman Royce Mulholland (pictured at left) donated $6,000 to the Henrico High School boys basketball state championship ring fund during a small ceremony at the school April 11. Mulholland, who owns several properties near the school, told the team’s players that he wanted to help them commemorate their title and also empower them with the responsibility to take the same championship attitude and demeanor with them off the court during the rest of their lives. Henrico cruised to its first state championship by beating John Marshall in March. > Read more.

NOVA of Virginia to host Swim-A-Thon

NOVA of Virginia Aquatics will host its annual Swim-A-Thon on Saturday, April 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the NOVA Aquatics Center in western Henrico. During the event, swimmers will have a two-hour period in which to swim a maximum of 200 lengths, or about three miles. Donors are encouraged to support the athletes either via a flat donation or by pledging a certain amount of money per length that the swimmer completes. The fundraising goal for the 2013 Swim-A-Thon is $55,000. > Read more.

Henrico boys’ basketball team plays for state title Friday

The Henrico High School boys’ basketball team will face John Marshall in the state championship game Friday night at VCU's Siegel Center, with tip-off expected at 9 p.m. The Warriors, champions of the Central District and Central Region, already have defeated John Marshall twice this year, winning in an in-season tournament and also in the Central Region championship game last week.

It will be the first time in Virginia High School League history that two Central Region teams have met for the state championship. > Read more.

Toyota to sponsor 2 RIR races in 2013

Toyota and Richmond International Raceway announced yesterday multi-year race entitlements, beginning with the April 26-27, 2013 doubleheader weekend at America’s Premier Short Track. The weekend will feature the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and the ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race. > Read more.

Deep Run graduate named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

University of Michigan freshman golfer Chris O'Neill, a Deep Run High School graduate, was named the Big Ten conference Golfer of the Week Oct. 17, following his career-best performance at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Oct. 15-16. It is the first conference accolade of his career.

O'Neill, who tied for 14th individually at the MacKenzie Invitational, recorded his second top-20 and lowered his career-best 54-hole tournament total by eight shots with his three-under 210. He bettered the 218 he posted earlier this season at the Windon Memorial Classic, held Sept. 23-24. > Read more.

Henrico Humane Society Receives Gift from Beath Foundation

The Henrico Humane Society (HHS) announced today that it had received a grant from the Jessica Beath Foundation. The foundation also agreed to a matching gift program for donations made to Henrico Humane Society through February 2011. The Beath Foundation’s mission is to provide for general charitable purposes, most notably the care and rescue of animals. > Read more.

Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen to Present ‘Illumina’

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen will offer “Illumina,” a holiday exhibition of various traditional and non-traditional Christmas trees each with their own theme for families to enjoy starting Dec. 4 – Dec. 30. The exhibit will showcase 16 trees on the first floor of the center, designed by Yvonne Hopkins, a local resident who offered to give her creations to the center for the public. The trees will have different colors, ornaments, lights and other items that make up a certain theme. > Read more.

Tim Lukhard (center), who with his wife Joy is Parham Estate’s newest homeowner, was officially welcomed into the neighborhood Nov. 10 with a housewarming gift from Carter Snipes (left) and Annie Snipes of Snipes Preferred Properties. Mother and son open new restaurant in Sandston

A new restaurant has opened in a well-known Sandston building.

The Sandston Kitchen will celebrate its official grand opening on Memorial Day, May 27. The restaurant is located in the site of the former Sandston Pharmacy at 2 West Williamsburg Road. It serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. > Read more.

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I agree whole-heartedly with their ratings. Since I first visited the restaurant for my birthday in January, I was waiting for the perfect special occasion to return. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.
