Virginia fisherman wins James River event in Henrico

Chris Daves of Spring Grove, Va., weighed a three-day total of 15 bass totaling 33 pounds to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on the James River Oct. 4. For his victory, Daves took home a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy 1500 Silverado, as well as entry into the 2015 BFL All-American presented by Chevy.

The regional tournament featured the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers from each of the Northeast, Piedmont, Shenandoah and South Carolina divisions.

“I would start up the James River, because the tide was lower up there in the morning, and then run down to Chickahominy Creek around lunchtime,” said Daves, who earned the third BFL win of his career. > Read more.

Hermitage to host Monday night football events

Hermitage High School will host weekly Monday gatherings in the school's auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. to provide the public with an inside glimpse of the Hermitage football program.

Football staff members will discuss offensive and defensive game-planning from the previous week's game, highlight top plays and outstanding players from the game and show video highlights from the game.

High school football kicked off last week around the region, and no game was bigger than Hermitage's thrilling 25-21 win against Meadowbrook, which came when quarterback Rashad Robinson scampered into the end zone (above) with just four seconds remaining. > Read more.

Babe Ruth 13U World Series arrives in Glen Allen

Teams from nine states will join the host team from the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series this week at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park.

The teams arrived Aug. 14 and gathered for a banquet; an opening ceremony will be held at the stadium Aug. 15, and play will begin the following day.

In total, the event will bring about 350 youth baseball players, coaches and family members to Henrico County.

The GAYAA team will compete with teams from Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and Montana. > Read more.

RIR September race tickets go on sale May 23

Tickets to NASCAR's September race weekend at Richmond International Raceway will go on sale to the general public Friday, May 23.

The weekend will feature the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Saturday, Sept. 6, which sets the field for the Sprint Cup Series' Chase for the Sprint Cup, locking in the drivers who areeligible for the season title. > Read more.

Arena Racing USA seeking donations to ‘Tickets for Troops’

Henrico-based Arena Racing USA, in partnership with USO Hampton Roads Central Virginia (USOHRCV), earlier this year launched "Tickets for Troops," a program to connect corporate and individual ticket sponsors with area military channels. USOHRCV is not the only recipient of the “Tickets for Troops” program; Arena Racing USA donates sponsored tickets to organizations such as: Fisher House Richmond, Fort Lee MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation), McGuire Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Air Force Training Squadron, and we continue to build relationships with other military-focused organizations and bases. > Read more.

Milestones

John Hutcheson, Jr., son of Rossie and Randy Hutcheson; Graham Jones, son of The Rev. and Mrs. Gary D. Jones; and Warren Snead, III, son of Brenda and Warren L. Snead, Jr., of Richmond, were recently inducted into the Order of Gownsmen at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. The Order of the Gowsnmen is a unique student government body among U.S. colleges and universities. Since 1875 the Order of Gownsmen has remained the body responsible for maintaining the spirit, traditions, and ideals of the University of the South. The wearing of the gown is both a sign of academic achievement and a promise to continue the ideals and traditions of the university. > Read more.

Godwin to host ‘Race to Nowhere’ film, panel discussion Nov. 17

Race to Nowhere: the Dark Side of America's Achievement Culture will be shown at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Godwin High School. A 30-minute discussion session will be held following the film, featuring a panel that includes a student, faculty member, principal, school board member, and college admissions director. > Read more.

A: Of course you know that. Everyone has heard the legend of Pocahontas and John Rolfe.

But there is a lot more to Henrico history. The county is wrapping up a year-long celebration of its 400th anniversary with a look at both everyday life and major events.

Virginia Randolph Education Center to host open house on Nov. 9

Virginia Randolph Education Center (VREC), which provides educational services to students with special needs, will hold an open house to showcase new materials and equipment on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. VREC received a special education grant that allowed them to renovate parts of their facility and invest in new and innovative learning tools for special needs children. > Read more.
