Monument City Classic volleyball tournament returns to town this weekend

More than 3,000 girls volleyball players from the Mid-Atlantic region will compete in the three-day Union First Market Bank Monument City Classic tournament, hosted by Henrico's Richmond Volleyball Club at the Greater Richmond Convention Center Jan. 17-19.

The event's 11th year also is expected to bring some 6,000 spectators to the region. Teams will travel to Richmond from Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina, bringing 10-12 players, 2-3 coaches and 10-15 spectators/parents apiece with them. > Read more.

Richmond Strikers form girls lacrosse program

NOV. 25, 12:47 P.M. – The Richmond Strikers Soccer Club and the Richmond Rapids Lacrosse Club today announced the formation of Richmond Strikers Lacrosse, a girls lacrosse program that will provide travel teams and training opportunities for girls in grades 3-6.

"Richmond Strikers Lacrosse will elevate girls lacrosse in Central Virginia and will continue our focus on positive player and whole person development" commented Beatrice 'Bea' Cope, Former Director of Rapids Lacrosse and the new Director of Richmond Strikers Lacrosse. "The Rapids were drawn to the Richmond Strikers because of their 40 years of experience in youth sports programming, professional organizational support, top class facility management, and nationally recognized tournaments."

Richmond Strikers Lacrosse will be directed by Bea Cope, founder of the Richmond Rapids. Two Rapids coaches, Heather Strausburg and Libby Rosebro, will join the Richmond Strikers Lacrosse coaching staff. Cope, Strausburg and Rosebro have been involved with youth lacrosse in the region for a number of years. > Read more.

Virginia fisherman wins James River event in Henrico

Chris Daves of Spring Grove, Va., weighed a three-day total of 15 bass totaling 33 pounds to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on the James River Oct. 4. For his victory, Daves took home a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy 1500 Silverado, as well as entry into the 2015 BFL All-American presented by Chevy.

The regional tournament featured the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers from each of the Northeast, Piedmont, Shenandoah and South Carolina divisions.

“I would start up the James River, because the tide was lower up there in the morning, and then run down to Chickahominy Creek around lunchtime,” said Daves, who earned the third BFL win of his career. > Read more.

Hermitage to host Monday night football events

Hermitage High School will host weekly Monday gatherings in the school's auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. to provide the public with an inside glimpse of the Hermitage football program.

Football staff members will discuss offensive and defensive game-planning from the previous week's game, highlight top plays and outstanding players from the game and show video highlights from the game.

High school football kicked off last week around the region, and no game was bigger than Hermitage's thrilling 25-21 win against Meadowbrook, which came when quarterback Rashad Robinson scampered into the end zone (above) with just four seconds remaining. > Read more.

Babe Ruth 13U World Series arrives in Glen Allen

Teams from nine states will join the host team from the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series this week at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park.

The teams arrived Aug. 14 and gathered for a banquet; an opening ceremony will be held at the stadium Aug. 15, and play will begin the following day.

In total, the event will bring about 350 youth baseball players, coaches and family members to Henrico County.

The GAYAA team will compete with teams from Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and Montana. > Read more.

Holiday festival at Willow Lawn Dec. 3

The Shops at Willow Lawn will host its holiday festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hope Harris and the Cousins Jamboree, Peter McCory and Jonathan the Juggler will perform on the Main Stage. Barksdale Theatre's Snowbear will also make a special appearance.

There will also be train rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, free photos with Santa in a photo booth, face painting, balloon art, crafts, giveaways, merchant specials and more. > Read more.

Auditions for ‘Nutcracker Sweet’ planned Saturday

Auditions for PDM Productions, Inc.’s “The Nutcracker Sweet” will take place Saturday, Sept. 15 at Deep Run High School. The audition is open to the community and dancers and actors of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Roles are available for dancers, actors, non-dancers and beginner dancers, ages five and up.

Participants need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled audition time. Registration will be in the cafeteria. Those auditioning should be ready with hair pulled back, wearing appropriate dance attire and footwear, warmed up and prepared to dance. > Read more.

CACGA, Regency Square partner to offer classes

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen and Regency Square Mall are partnering to bring art classes designed by the center and taught by center instructors to the mall.

Classes will begin in September with one adult and one youth class (for grades 1-6) each month. For adults, classes are offered in visual arts, fiber arts, jewelry making and confectionary arts. For youth, classes are offered in visual arts including classes in drawing, cartooning, pastels and watercolors. > Read more.

Snagajob ‘Hourly Gig’ contest pared to 5 finalists

Snagajob has selected five finalists in its 'Hourly Gig' competition, and one act will be selected by online voters to open for Brantley Gilbert at the Snagajob Pavilion in Innsbrook Sept. 19.

Three of the finalists have local connections, including the band Everwilde, whose lead singer, Dan Nicholls, is a mechanic in the region. The country band is influenced by Southern rock and blues.

Two other finalists – George Taylor and Emma White – are from the Richmond region originally. > Read more.
