RIR September race tickets go on sale May 23

Tickets to NASCAR's September race weekend at Richmond International Raceway will go on sale to the general public Friday, May 23.

The weekend will feature the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Saturday, Sept. 6, which sets the field for the Sprint Cup Series' Chase for the Sprint Cup, locking in the drivers who areeligible for the season title. > Read more.

Arena Racing USA seeking donations to ‘Tickets for Troops’

Henrico-based Arena Racing USA, in partnership with USO Hampton Roads Central Virginia (USOHRCV), earlier this year launched "Tickets for Troops," a program to connect corporate and individual ticket sponsors with area military channels. USOHRCV is not the only recipient of the “Tickets for Troops” program; Arena Racing USA donates sponsored tickets to organizations such as: Fisher House Richmond, Fort Lee MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation), McGuire Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Air Force Training Squadron, and we continue to build relationships with other military-focused organizations and bases. > Read more.

HCPS to stream Friday’s Varina-Highland Springs football game

Didn't get a ticket to the sold-out Varina-Highland Springs football game Friday night? You can still watch the game online, thanks to Henrico County Public Schools. HCPS-TV will stream the game live through its website, http://www.henrico.k12.va.us Varin.a enters the game 8-1, while Highland Springs is 7-2. NOVA swimmers win 13th straight Va. Swimming Long Course title

NOVA of Virginia, a Henrico-based swim program, recently won the Virginia Swimming Long Course age group championship for a 13th consecutive time.

NOVA sent 110 swimmers to the Christiansburg, Va., competition, where they broke six Virginia records and seven meet records. > Read more.

Coaches participate in Redskins clinic

A number of Henrico County high school football coaches and athletic officials attended the Washington Redskins High School Coaches Clinic July 31 at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond. The clinic, presented by Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers, was hosted by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen, Head Coach Mike Shanahan and former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington. > Read more.

‘America Recycles Day’ is today

America Recycles Day, recognized annually on Nov.15, is designed to celebrate the successes of recycling while providing an educational platform that helps raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the year.

America Recycles Day is a national initiative of non-profit Keep America Beautiful,Inc.(KAB). Millions of Americans have pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and at work over the 14-year history of ARD,a nationally-recognized initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home,at work,and on the go. > Read more.

HPAC honors 5 preservation champions

Two individuals, two organizations, and one newspaper – the Henrico Citizen – were honored recently by the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC) for their efforts to preserve and promote Henrico County heritage.

In a ceremony held Oct. 26 at the Henrico Theatre, HPAC Chairman Beverly Cocke presented the awards accompanied by Henrico County Manager Virgil Hazelett.

Genealogist and retired educator Brenda Dabney Nichols received the Award of Merit for her lectures and programs regarding Henrico history topics and for her recent publication African Americans of Henrico County. > Read more.

Salvation Army musician kicks off Red Kettle Campaign with 36 straight hours of music

At 9 a.m. this morning, Salvation Army musician Matt Sims kicked off the annual Red Kettle Campaign at Short Pump Town Center with bells and music. He will play for 36 hours, ending at 9 p.m. Nov. 12. The feat of playing 36 consecutive hours has never before been attempted by any Salvation Army musician. The idea came to him in late summer as he was thinking of ways to increase awareness for the Red Kettle Campaign at a time when donations to The Salvation Army are more important than ever. > Read more.

Musical whodunit reunites enthusiastic cast, director

Henrico Theatre Company’s ‘Curtains’ opens May 6 at Cultural Arts Center
Ask anybody in the cast or crew about the Henrico Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Curtains and the response always includes the word "fun."

Director Amy Perdue can’t stress it enough. “This show is fun, fun, fun,” she said. “I have fun doing this every night,” she said of the five times a week rehearsals that began in March.

Curtains, a musical comedy whodunit, will be performed at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen May 6-22. > Read more.
