Athlete of the Week – March 27: Walter Williams

Henrico High School, boys' basketball

Walter Williams cried tears of joy after Henrico won the 5A boys basketball state championship. The 6-foot-4 senior guard had come a long way since failing off of the team as a freshman.

“It was a very humbling experience that not everybody could say they have, to be state champs,” said Williams.

Williams scored 37 points against Bird in the region’s semi-finals, including the shot that sent the game into overtime at the buzzer. That shot incited wild celebration, and the crowd spilled onto the court. Henrico went on to win in double-overtime. > Read more.

Athlete of the Week – March 20: Annemarie Beran

Annemarie Beran was tired of Tucker basketball not being taken seriously.

“My freshman and sophomore year people just didn’t respect us,” Beran said. “They thought they could just come in and walk all over us.”
This year, however, after going 20-4 and finishing eighth in the Times-Dispatch rankings, opponents are viewing the Tucker Tigers in a different light.

Much of the team’s success can be attributed to Beran, who said that she and her teammates began preparing for the season last spring by returning to fundamentals. > Read more.

On Feb. 22, Godwin High School senior Justice Williams won the 2015 5A state wrestling championship for the 220-pound weight class. Williams pinned his opponent using a half-Nelson with 20 seconds left in the third period.

The victory came moments after Williams’ teammate was carried off the mat with a concussion, and Williams dedicated his victory to his teammate. > Read more.
