Hermitage to host Monday night football events

Hermitage High School will host weekly Monday gatherings in the school's auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. to provide the public with an inside glimpse of the Hermitage football program.

Football staff members will discuss offensive and defensive game-planning from the previous week's game, highlight top plays and outstanding players from the game and show video highlights from the game.

High school football kicked off last week around the region, and no game was bigger than Hermitage's thrilling 25-21 win against Meadowbrook, which came when quarterback Rashad Robinson scampered into the end zone (above) with just four seconds remaining. > Read more.

Babe Ruth 13U World Series arrives in Glen Allen

Teams from nine states will join the host team from the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association in the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series this week at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park.

The teams arrived Aug. 14 and gathered for a banquet; an opening ceremony will be held at the stadium Aug. 15, and play will begin the following day.

In total, the event will bring about 350 youth baseball players, coaches and family members to Henrico County.

The GAYAA team will compete with teams from Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and Montana. > Read more.

RIR September race tickets go on sale May 23

Tickets to NASCAR's September race weekend at Richmond International Raceway will go on sale to the general public Friday, May 23.

The weekend will feature the Federated Auto Parts 400 on Saturday, Sept. 6, which sets the field for the Sprint Cup Series' Chase for the Sprint Cup, locking in the drivers who areeligible for the season title. > Read more.

Arena Racing USA seeking donations to ‘Tickets for Troops’

Henrico-based Arena Racing USA, in partnership with USO Hampton Roads Central Virginia (USOHRCV), earlier this year launched "Tickets for Troops," a program to connect corporate and individual ticket sponsors with area military channels. USOHRCV is not the only recipient of the “Tickets for Troops” program; Arena Racing USA donates sponsored tickets to organizations such as: Fisher House Richmond, Fort Lee MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation), McGuire Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Air Force Training Squadron, and we continue to build relationships with other military-focused organizations and bases. > Read more.

HCPS to stream Friday’s Varina-Highland Springs football game

Didn't get a ticket to the sold-out Varina-Highland Springs football game Friday night? You can still watch the game online, thanks to Henrico County Public Schools. HCPS-TV will stream the game live through its website, http://www.henrico.k12.va.us Varin.a enters the game 8-1, while Highland Springs is 7-2. Theme sought for inaugural ‘Dogwood Classic’

Colonial Downs is seeking nominations for a theme for the inaugural "Dogwood Classic" (formerly the Strawberry Hill Races) racing and tailgating event that will take place at the track April 6, 2013.

RABA to donate bikes to Christmas Mother programs

Members of the Richmond Area Bicycle Association recently contributed $13,000 to buy 198 new bicycles and helmets for donation to area Christmas Mother programs.

The bicycles were assembled on Nov. 3 by more than 50 volunteers from RABA and will be distributed to area Christmas Mothers Dec. 1. Volunteers will load up trucks & trailers and deliver the bikes to Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, New Kent, Chesterfield, Powhatan and Charles City counties. The Christmas Mothers will give them to needy families who have applied for help. The club worked to match appropriate bicycles to the needs of the children in the various counties. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA receives $7k donation from Kiwanis Club

The Tuckahoe Family YMCA recently received a $7,000 donation from the Tuckahoe Kiwanis Club. The money was raised during the group’s eighth annual golf tournament and will help the Y continue its programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The donation is the organization’s way of giving back to the community it serves, Kiwanis Club of Tuckahoe Tournament Director Bland Weaver said. > Read more.

AMC television series seeks background actors

The new AMC television series “TURN” is currently being filmed in and around Richmond, and casting officials are seeking background actors to appear on screen.

“The background actors are profoundly important to the filmmaking process,” said Erica Arvold, casting director. “The show takes place during the Revolutionary War, and background actors contribute to the atmosphere of that era.” > Read more.

On a rare warm night in late November, the newly opened American Tap Room was, to my surprise, bright and packed with guests – many eating outside.

I didn’t have a clue what to expect from this unheard-of restaurant in an unexpected spot – right in the heart of Willow Lawn. I came to learn it’s not unheard of; it’s a restaurant chain out of Northern Virginia.

“It definitely improves the look of Willow Lawn,” said my friend, who ventured to the new spot with me on a Monday night for dinner one week after the restaurant opened. > Read more.
