SunTrust to sponsor raceways’s military appreciation program


JULY 31, 10:15 A.M. – Richmond Raceway and SunTrust Banks, Inc. today announced that the financial institution would sponsor the raceway's military appreciation program for the fall NASCAR race weekend, presented by Who’s Your Driver.

The "Military Appreciation Program presented by SunTrust" will feature an opportunity for fans to visit the SunTrust “onUp on Tour” pop-up entertainment experience that inspires visitors to learn about finances through interactive, sports-based activities.

Code Lacrosse joins Richmond Strikers


The Code Lacrosse youth program has joined the Richmond Strikers and will be rebranded as Richmond Strikers Boys Lacrosse, the two programs announced June 19.

Code Lacrosse, founded in 2010, hosts teams for boys in elementary and middle school.

Jordan Clevey will run the day-to-day operations as the director of the program, while Code Lacrosse's director, Steve Ceperich, will provide program oversight as the director of development and coaching.

5 Henrico student-athletes win scholarships at awards dinner

Five Henrico student-athletes were among 20 from the region honored with scholarships at the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at The Jefferson Hotel June 5.

The program, now in its 26th year, honors local scholar-athletes for their athletic, academic and extracurricular achievements. Since the program's inception in 1992, more than $1 million in scholarship money has been awarded to 514 outstanding student-athletes from the Richmond region.

RIR to host playoff race in 2018

Track also returning spring race to evening time slot
For the first time in its history, Richmond International Raceway next year will host playoff races in both of NASCAR's top two series, track officials announced May 23.

The track will host a NASCAR Xfinity Series playoff race Sept. 21, 2018 and a Monster Energy Cup Series playoff race the following day. (The Monster Energy Cup Series is the highest level of NASCAR competition.)

RIR also will move its spring Monster Energy Cup Series race – which has been held on Sunday afternoon the past two years – back to Saturday night, on April 21. RIR previously had hosted night races since 1991 but moved the spring race to the afternoon in an attempt to attract more families. But attendance at least month's race was one of the lowest in recent memory.

RIR to host Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship


The season finale of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour will take place at Richmond International Raceway during the track’s fall NASCAR race week festivities. QubicaAMF, whose U.S. headquarters are in Richmond, will install four state-of-the-art lanes inside the Old Dominion Building for the event as part of its new sponsorship of the PWBA.

The Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship is set for Sept. 3-6 in the Old Dominion Building at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The 16-player field will be composed of PWBA members who win a 2017 event and completed by point earners for the season.

RIR bringing back red stripes to track walls


Richmond International Raceway is bringing back classic red stripes on the track's walls this year.

It will be the first time since February 1988 that the stripes appear on the walls. At that time, RIR was only a half-mile track with metal guardrails striped in red.

Austin Dillon headlines Track Takeover at RIR

Track Takeover driven by AAA returns to Richmond International Raceway April 30, providing fans the opportunity to walk the track, enjoy interactive displays, and sign their name at the Start/Finish line just hours prior to the green flag. The fan-friendly event is open to all ticketholders of the TOYOTA OWNERS 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race from 10 a.m. to noon April 30.

At Track Takeover driven by AAA, Austin Dillon will take part in on-track activities hosted by Michael Blair on the Frontstretch Stage at 11 a.m. Fans will be able to see one of the sport’s young guns share stories about his time in the sport and his career to date.

Highland Springs girls fall in state title game


The Highland Springs High School girls' basketball team fell to Princess Anne High School in the Group 5A state championship game, 77-60 Mar. 10 at VCU's Siegel Center. The Springers' dominant season ended at 26-2, while Princess Anne – which has now won four straight state titles – improved to 27-2.

Jenna Bush Hager, author, television personality and the daughter of President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, will speak at a special event to build community support for the Virginia Women’s Monument. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s School at 6001 Grove Ave. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at http://www.virginiacapitol.gov. Proceeds will go toward commissioning the life-size bronze statue of Adele Goodman Clark, who was a 1901 graduate of Virginia Randolph Ellett School, the predecessor of St. Catherine’s School. The Virginia Women’s Monument, when completed, will include 12 bronze sculptures of women who have made significant but often unrecognized contributions to the 400-year history of Virginia. There will also be a glass Wall of Honor with the names and narratives of hundreds more Virginia women who made contributions to the state. Full text
